MOUNTING YOUR WINCH
Improper
WARNING
!
mounting
can cause personal injury.
Improper mounting could
damage your winch and void
warranty.
MINIMUM ELECTRICAL
REQUIREMENTS
A 60 amp alternator and battery
with 440 cold-cranking amperes
capacity are the minimum recom-
mended power sources. If the winch
is in heavy use, an auxiliary battery
is recommended.
Under some circumstances, it may
be appropriate to install additional
circuit protection devices (circuit
breakers). If in doubt, seek
appropriate advice.
Superwinch recommends that all
winch electrical systems can be readi-
ly and quickly isolated from their
electrical supply in the event of an
emergency. The winch electrical sys-
tem should always be isolated when
the winch is not in use.
1. Install mounting kit or structural
support for winch.
2. Mount the winch to a mounting
kit base plate or to the mount
that you designed. Mounting
plate should be a minimum of
1/4" (6.3mm) thick for the EP12.5.
Mounting plate should be a mini-
mum of 5/16" (7.9mm) thick for
the EP16.5. Use M12 x 40mm
bolts for 1/4" thick steel and M12
x 45mm bolts for 5/16" thick
steel. The ends of the mounting
bolts must not contact the oppo-
site side of the casting.

WINCH INSTALLATION

ISO Grade 10.9 mounting hardware
is supplied with winch. There are
four square mounting pockets in
bottom of each drum supporting
casting. USE THE INNERMOST TWO
THAT FORM THE 4.5" x 10" BOLT
PATTERN. Attach winch to mount-
ing plate (see Figure 10).
Always place M12-1.75 square nuts
(provided) in the casting pockets
when mounting winch.
To install mounting nuts, position
the winch with the 8 foot-forward
mounting holes facing forward and
the freespool lever upright. For a
4.5" x 10" mounting pattern, insert
the four nuts into the four inner-
most nut pockets. Once installed,
rotate the winch so the nuts are
facing down. (See Figure 9). Using a
small screwdriver, carefully insert
the two mouting nuts into the nut
pockets located on the opposite
side of the freespool lever by first
pushing the nut into the pocket
and then tipping it up into position.
Then rotate the winch back to its
original position. It is now ready to
be mounted to the mounting plate.
The end of the mounting bolts must
not contact the top of the mount-
ing pocket. Such contact could lead
to catastrophic failure of the winch
and void warranty. Adjust bolt
lengths accordingly if a thicker
plate is used. The bolt threads must
engage all the nut threads. (See
Figure 6.)
Automobile bat-
DANGER
!
teries contain
gasses which are flammable and
explosive. Wear eye protection
during installation and remove all
metal jewelry. Do not lean over
battery while making connections.
3. Disconnect vehicle battery.
4. The battery lead wires should be
routed to the battery. To ensure
against insulation abrasion and/or
cutting, apply several layers of
electrical tape where wiring may
come in contact with sharp metal
parts of vehicle. All connections
to motor, solenoids and battery
ground require good, clean, tight
connections. Connect the red lead
to the battery (+) and the black
lead to the battery (-).

!
wiring. Incorrect
wiring could result in motor
burnout and/or personal injury.
5. The solenoid assembly may be mount-
ed remotely as space requires. When
remote mounting, DO NOT mount
with the solenoid connections (under
the cover) facing down. Failure to do
so could cause erratic operation. If
assembly is located more than 27"
(.7m) from winch, use a larger
diameter wire.
6. Reconnect the battery positive then
negative terminal. Rotate the clutch
lever to the "disengaged" position.
Pull several feet of wire rope off the
drum. Return the clutch lever back to
the "Engaged" position. Plug in
remote switch assembly. Switch the
hand control to "Rope-Out" position.
Pull trigger momentarily to check
wire rope drum rotation direction. If
drum rotates in the wrong direction,
recheck your wiring.
To prevent

unauthorized
use of the winch, remove pendant
control and store in a clean dry
area such as the glove box.
PENDANT OPERATION
The handheld pendant switch
activates a solenoid that activates
power to the winch motor.
To connect the pendant control, remove
the cover on the plug receptacle and
insert the plug end of remote switch
(see Figure 7). The plug on the pendant
control cord is keyed and will fit into the
socket only one way.
Figure 7
The switch trigger returns to the
"Off" position when released.
To change direction, move the toggle
in the other direction. (See Figure 8).
