loosening your grip on the handles of the tool.
• The saw chain must not touch the ground or any object while sawing through the material or
thereafter.
• After finishing the cut, wait until the chainsaw comes to stop before removing it.
• For sawing work on hillsides, always stand in the area above the log.
Felling tree
• WARNING! DO NOT fell trees during periods
of high wind or heavy precipitation.
• WARNING! DO NOT cut down trees having
an extreme lean or trees that have rotten limbs,
loose bark, or hollow trunks. Have these trees
pushed or dragged down with heavy equipment,
then cut them up.
• WARNING! DO NOT cut trees or branches
near power lines or electrical wires. Contact
with power lines or live electrical wires will
result in serious personal injury or possible
death.
• WARNING! DO NOT cut trees or branches
near buildings, which may result in serious
injuries or property damage.
• WARNING! Check the tree for damaged or
dead branches that could fall and hit you during
felling.
• WARNING! Periodically glance at the top of
the tree during the backcut to assure the tree is
going to fall in the desired direction.
• WARNING! If the tree starts to fall in the
wrong direction, or if the saw gets caught or
hung up during the fall, leave the saw and
save yourself!
• Trees should not be felled in a manner that
would endanger any person, strike any utility
line or cause any property damage. If the tree
does make contact with any utility line, the
utility company should be notified
immediately.
• Decide the felling direction considering the
wind, lean of the tree, location of heavy
branches, ease of completing the task after felling and other factors.
• While clearing the area around the tree, arrange a good foothold and retreat path (see Fig. 5).
• Make a notch cut one-third of the way into the tree on the felling side (see Fig. 6).
• Make a felling cut from the opposite side of the notch and at a level slightly higher than the
bottom of the notch.
• IMPORTANT! Before felling a tree, evacuate all persons from work area and monitor work
area. When you fell a tree, be sure to warn neighboring workers of the danger.
Bucking
• Bucking is cutting a fallen log into lengths. It is important to make sure your footing is firm
and your weight is evenly distributed on both feet.
• The best way to hold a log while bucking is to use a saw horse. When this is not possible, the
