in the broad portfolio of complications
that
epitomize Patek Philippe's virtuosity, chrono-
graphs have always occupied a prominent position.
In the period from 2005 to 2011, the Genevan manu-
facture impressively showcased its skills and com-
petence in this domain by developing eight com-
pletely "home-made" chronograph movements.
The palette extends from the classic manually
wound chronograph with a column wheel and a
horizontal clutch to the self-winding chronograph
with a vertical disk clutch – not to mention the
extremely complex split-seconds chronographs
with and without perpetual calendars.
the a and o of the chronograph
On the occasion of its 175th anniversary, Patek
Philippe is paying tribute to this rich heritage
with a multi-scale timekeeping instrument which
reflects this tradition in chronographs and recalls
an epoch in which the tachymeter (for measuring
speeds), the telemeter (for determining distances),
and the pulsimeter (for calculating heart beats per
minute) were still used on a daily basis. The result
is a chronograph in its purest form featuring three
different scales that make these measurements
possible. The new caliber CH 28-520 exemplifies
the alliance between tradition and innovation.
It combines the classic column-wheel concept
with a modern vertical clutch that prevents the
chronograph hand from bouncing or rebounding
when a measurement is started. Because the clutch
generates virtually no friction, the chronograph
hand can be left running and used as an ordinary
seconds hand. The flyback function, activated with
the pusher at 4 o'clock, allows a new measurement
to be started at any time without first having to
stop and reset the chronograph.
