17. ROUTINE SERVICING
To ensure efficient operation of the boiler it is recommended that it is checked and serviced as necessary at regular intervals. The
frequency of servicing will depend upon the particular installation conditions and usage, but in general once per year should be
adequate.
The manufacturer recommends that any service work must be carried out by a licensed technician.
CAUTION
Label all wires prior to disconnection when servicing controls. Wiring errors can cause improper and dangerous
operation.
IMPORTANT NOTES PRIOR TO SERVICING
WARNING
The combustion chamber insulation in this product contains ceramic fibre material. Ceramic fibres can be converted
to cristobalite in very high temperature applications. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has
concluded, Crystalline silica inhaled in the form of quartz or cristobalite from occupational sources is carcinogenic
to humans (Group1). Avoid breathing dust and contact with skin and eyes. Use NIOSH certified dust respirator (N95).
This type of respirator is based on the OSHA requirements for cristobalite at the time this document was written. Other
types of respirators may be needed depending on the job site conditions. Current NIOSH recommendations can be
found on the NIOSH website athttp://www.cdc.gov/niosh/homepage.html. NIOSH approved respirators, manufacturers,
and phone numbers are also listed on this website. Wear long-sleeved, loose fitting clothing, gloves, and eye
protection. Apply enough water to the combustion chamber lining to prevent dust Wash potentially contaminated
clothes separately from other clothing. Rinse clothes washer thoroughly.
NIOSH stated First Aid.
Eye: Irrigate immediately.
Breathing: Fresh air.
• Check the flue terminal outside and ensure it is not blocked.
• Run the boiler and check the operation of its controls.
• Ensure that all system connections and fittings are sound. Remake any joints and check the tightness of any fittings that may
be leaking.
• It is recommended that the operation of the safety valve is checked by lifting the lever at the top of the valve upwards, allowing
water to escape from the system - check that this is actually happening.
To ensure the boiler operates at peak efficiency, the following checks must be performed every year:
• check on the appearance and tightness of the gas and combustion circuit gaskets
• check on the condition and position of the ignition and flame sensing electrodes. Remove any oxidation on the sensing
electrode and burner using fine sandpaper.
• check on the condition of the burner and its fixing to the aluminium flange
• check for any dirt in the combustion chamber. Use a vacuum-cleaner for this cleaning operation
• check that the gas valve is calibrated correctly
• check that there is no dirt in the condensate trap
• check on the central heating system pressure
• check on the expansion tank pressure
• check the vent system and clean it if necessary
Record details of the service in the "SERVICE HISTORY" section on last page of this manual.
WARNING
Before servicing the boiler isolate the electrical supply and close the boiler gas service cock. Allow the boiler to cool.
Always test for gas leaks after servicing any gas carrying components. Verify proper operation after servicing.
