MAINTENANCE
Sharpening the saw chain
CAUTION: Before doing any work on the
guide bar or chain, always switch off the
engine and pull the plug cap off the spark
plug (see "Instruction manual"). Always wear
protective gloves!
The chain needs sharpening when:
-
The tungsten carbide inserts on several cutters are dull or
damaged.
-
The chain will cut only if substantial pressure is applied.
-
The guide bar tends to run to one side in the material.
This is caused by uneven sharpness.
Sharpening the saw chain
-
Use an electrical sharpener with a 4 mm silicon carbide wheel
intended for use with tungsten carbide. Use as directed.
-
Sharpening requires proper equipment and training, and
should be left to properly outÞ tted workshops.
-
A 145 x 4 x 22 grinding wheel specially designed for the
RescueCut saw chain for use with the DOLMAR 340 / MAXX
sharpener is available under part number 341 013 014.

The sharpening angle α must be the same for all teeth.
-
Different angles result in a roughly, irregularly running chain,
increase wear and tear and cause chain beakage.

Proper sharpening:
-
All cutters must be of the same length (dimension a). Cutters
with different lengths result in rough running of the chain and
can cause cracks in the chain.
-
Minimum tooth length is 3 mm. Do not resharpen the chain
when the teeth are down to this length. Instead, install a
new RescueCut saw chain.
-
The height between depth limiter (round lug) and the cutting
edge determines the chip thickness.
-
The best results are obtained with a depth-limiter depth of
0.64 mm (.025").
CAUTION:
Excessive depth increases
the risk of kickback!
F
-
After sharpening the tooth, dull the front rake (F/1) by grind-
ing in the opposite direction. Do not exceed the 3 mm as
shown.
Cleaning the guide bar
CAUTION:
Protective gloves must be worn!
G
-
Regularly inspect the bearing surfaces of the guide bar for
damage, and clean them with a suitable tool.
