The Industrial Ethernet™ OSM (Optical
Switch Module) allow Industrial Ethernet™
networks in switching technology with
industrial twisted pair (data rate 10 Mbit/s)
and one Fast Industrial Ethernet™ backbone
with optical waveguide (F/O, data rate 100
Mbit/s) to be constructed.
The use of switching technology simplifies
network configuration and network extensi-
on. At the same time, large networks with
many subscribers can be realized.
Industrial Ethernet™ OSMs come with four
Industrial Twisted Pair (ITP) interfaces, two
optical interfaces (2x2 BFOC sockets, F/O
ports) and a standby port.
Up to four terminal devices or complete
network segments can be connected to an
Industrial Ethernet™ OSM via ITP ports. Exi-
sting Industrial Twisted Pair Networks
based on Industrial Ethernet™ OLM/ELM
and SIMATIC NET Industrial Ethernet™
communication processors with ITP interfa-
ces can be directly connected to the ITP
ports via an ITP line. Terminal devices or
network components with RJ45 socket can
be connected via an adapter line.
Other Industrial Ethernet™ OSMs can be
connected via the F/O ports. To further
increase network availability, the optical
OSM line can be connected with an Indu-
strial Ethernet™ ORM (Optical Redundancy
Manager) to form a redundant Industrial
Ethernet™ backbone ring. For this purpose,
the unassigned F/O ports of the OSMs at
the start and finish of the optical line are
connected to the two F/O ports of an Indu-
strial Ethernet™ ORM.
The redundant Industrial Ethernet™ Back-
bone Ring makes the realization of a rapid
media redundancy possible, even for very
large networks.
The standby port enables the linkage of two
Industrial Ethernet™ OSMs, one of which
operates in standby mode. With this opera-
ting mode, pairs of OSMs can be employed
for redundant switching of OSM or OLM
rings.
