draft may cause an excessive temperature in the appliance, glowing red ap-
pliance parts or an uncontrollable burn which can all lead to a chimney fi re
or a permanent damage to the appliance.
Roll up some newspaper, light it and place it near the appliance fl ue until
the chimney begins to draw. When a fi re is burning, open the door slowly to
avoid drawing smoke into the room.

FUEL LOADING AND BURN CYCLE
BURN WOOD DIRECTLY ON THE FIREBRICKS. DO NOT USE ELEVATED GRATE OR OTHERWISE
DO NOT STORE WOOD WITHIN APPLIANCE INSTALLATION CLEARANCES OR WITHIN THE SPACE
DOUBLE LATCH SYSTEM
The fi rebox door is equipped with a double latch system. To close the door hold the door
handle at the 12 o'clock position as door swings to meet the fi rebox. Once the door has
made contact with the fi rebox, the door handle can be turned clockwise to the 3 o'clock
position. In the 12 to 3 o'clock positions, the 1st latch will have engaged and will allow
the door to be cracked open by approximately 1/4" (0.6 cm). This is useful to help create
draft while starting a fi re, but the latch should not remain in this position once fi re is es-
tablished. Do not try to force the door handle past the 3 o'clock position while on the 1st
latch as this can damage the mechanism. To completely seal the door for normal opera-
tion the 2nd latch must be engaged. To do this, push the door tightly against the fi rebox
and continue turning the handle clockwise to the 5 o'clock position. The door should
now provide an air tight seal with the fi rebox.

The bricks will be nearly all white and the glass mostly clear. The whiteness of the bricks and the cleanness of the
glass (if equipped) are good indicators of your operating effi ciency.
Not enough heat is produced when only one or two pieces of wood are burned.
A minimum of three pieces are needed to encase a bed of coals that sustains the fi re. Loosely stacked wood burns
quicker than a tightly packed load.
Wood burns in cycles rather than giving a steady output of heat. It is best to plan these cycles around your
household routine so that only enough coals are left to start the next load. In the evening, load your appliance, at
least, a half-hour before bed to ensure the fi re is hot enough to close the draft control for an overnight burn.
Burn only dry seasoned wood. It produces more heat and less soot or creosote. Do not burn ocean beach wood. Its
salt content can produce a metal eating acid.
