1. INTRODUCTION
This manual contains information for the installation and operation of the CHAUVIN ARNOUX STATOP
4849 « fuzzy logic » microprocessor based autotuning controller.
Simplicity is an essential feature of this versatile controller. Four touch keys on a splash-proof membrane
front panel are used to select sensor type, range, control mode, control parameters, alarm mode,
resolution, °C/°F, Auto/Manual mode, etc. A degree of security against unauthorised tampering is afforded,
by the necessity to press the keys in sequence.
Two easily-read 4-digit displays show process and setpoint values at a glance. The high resolution CAD,
thermocouple linearisation, cold junction compensation and 3 mode PID calculations are all completed
by the single microprocessor chip. All values and parameters are held in non-volatile memory, and
retained for up to ten years, even if the unit is left unpowered. This eliminates the need for batteries.
The auto-tuning feature determines the correct controller settings (proportional band, derivative and
integral times) to provide accurate control with minimal overshoot and temperature oscillation. Once
executed, auto-tuning will not need to be repeated whilst the controller is used on the same process.
Single stage ramp and soak is another versatile function of the STATOP 4849.

2. PRELIMINARY INSTRUCTIONS
2.1
Installation precautions
In industrial locations, equipment with microprocessors can sometimes be disturbed : it is therefore
prudent to take certain precautions to get optimal service from it.
Temperature. Check that the climatic conditions do not diverge from those specified in the User's
Manual (limits of ambient temperature and relative humidity). Take care not to exceed 50°C and install
air conditioning equipment if there is a risk of exceeding them.
Vibration, shocks. It is necessary to arrange the instrument in a place protected from shocks and
excessive vibrations and, generally, to take all precautions to ensure its mechanical protection.
Dust. In very dusty atmospheres or harsh environments (e.g. acid vapour), the instrument must be
placed in an enclosure, cupboard, or even subjected to low pressure clean, dry air or neutral gas.
Electric and magnetic fields. In order to avoid the harmful effects of certain power equipment, keep the
instrument away from power contactors, static relays with triacs and thyristors, motors and all relays.
Wiring. Precautions must be taken with the connections and in particular those concerning the
measurement input and the analogue output. These links are sensitive to interference : use twisted and
screened cables, with insulated screening connected to the earth by the ground of the instrument.
Separate these power lines (different cable runs) throughout their length (network and control circuit).
The same precautions must be taken for intermittent links such as the control logic output (for SSR
command) and the alarm output.
On the links for intermittent outputs for control, on AC or DC current, of contacts, electro-valves, bi-
directional motors, whether they are outputs of regulators, threshold relays, monitoring cards, we advise
placing RC circuits at the terminals of industrial loads (contactor and electro-valve coils, motors,...)
controlled by the outputs of equipment, and placing a diode in reverse at the terminals of a choke
powered by DC current.
