Direct Vent Indoor Installation (US and Canada)
Horizontal Through-the-Wall
Termination
The flue direct vent cap MUST be mounted on the exterior of the building. The direct vent cap cannot be installed in
a well or below grade. The direct vent cap must be installed at least 1' (0.3 m) above ground level and above normal
snow levels, see Figure 254, page 33. The direct vent cap MUST NOT be installed with any combustion air inlet directly
above a direct vent cap. This vertical spacing would allow the flue products from the direct vent cap to be pulled into the
combustion air intake installed above.
This type of installation can cause non-warrantable problems with components and poor operation of the heater due to
the recirculation of flue products. Multiple direct vent caps should be installed in the same horizontal plane with a 4'
(1.22 m) clearance from the side of one vent cap to the side of the adjacent vent cap(s).
Care must be taken during assembly that all joints are sealed properly and are airtight. The vent must be drained to prevent
the potential accumulation of condensate in the vent pipes.
It is recommended that the intake vent (see Figure 27) be insulated in colder climates.
Combustion air supplied from outdoors must be free of particulate and chemical contaminants. To avoid a blocked flue
condition, keep the vent cap clear of snow, ice, leaves, debris, etc.
No substitutions of flue pipe or vent cap material are allowed. Such substitutions would jeopardize the safety
and health of inhabitants. Use CPVC schedule 40 per ASTM D2665, CPVC schedule F441 or stainless steel, such
as AL 29-4C per UL 1738 in USA. Canada must comply with ULC-S636 code requirements.
Venting: Vent systems for Category IV appliances that terminate through an outside wall of a building and discharge flue
gases perpendicular to the adjacent wall, must be located not less than 10 ft horizontally from an operable opening in the
adjacent building. Exception: This does not apply to vent terminals that are 2 ft or more above 25 ft or more below the
operable openings. Through the wall vents for Category IV must not terminate over public walkways or over an area where
condensate or vapour could create nuisance or hazard or could be detrimental to the operation of regulators, relief valves,
or other equipment.
