Congratulations on your purchase of
a Tulikivi fireplace with baking oven!
You now have a Tulikivi fireplace with a built-in Tulikivi bak-
ing oven. This is a supplementary manual on the use of your
baking oven. The actual Tulikivi fireplace operating manual
contains instructions on heating the fireplace.
Before using your baking oven
The baking oven should be wiped clean before starting to
use it. The baking oven is not heated directly by firewood
but by the heat from the fireplace. You must therefore first
light a fire in the fireplace below the oven. To do so, follow
the firing instructions for the fireplace, taking into
account the following exceptions:
- Keep the door of the baking oven open during the curing
and breaking in of the fireplace.
- Always start the fire by lighting the wood at the top of
the pile, see image 1. This ensures that the wood burns as
cleanly as possible from the start.
Using your baking oven
The oven temperature is easy to monitor using the grate
thermometer supplied.

Please note, that the damper (if installed) has to be left
slightly open during cooking and baking. There is a small
steam exhaust hole at the rear wall behind the upper back
tiles through which the steam from the food escapes to the
chimney. When you clean the tiles and put the upper tiles
back to their place, put them against door frame at front.
This way they don't block the steam escaping into the steam
exhaust hole.
When using the baking oven for a longer period or at high-
er temperatures, the fireplace should be fired the previous
day, too. This results in a more even temperature in the bak-
ing oven. The baking oven heats to a temperature of about
220–260 ºC (428–500 ºF). The baking oven is at its hottest
around 5 to 7 hours after lighting the fireplace. A baking ov-
en that has been heated the previous day as well will remain
above 200 ºC (392 ºF) for up to five hours, falling below
this some 4 to 5 hours after reaching the peak temperature.
The oven temperature needed will depend on what you are
cooking/baking. A pizza is best placed in the oven around 6
hours after the fireplace is lit, when the temperature is at
its highest. A pie requiring 200 ºC (392 ºF) is best placed in
the oven approximately 5 hours after lighting the fire. During
testing, we heated the fireplace with 17.5 kilos (38.6 lbs) of
dry firewood. If you burn less, the temperature in the baking

oven will not be as high, and will not be retained for as long
as with maximum firing.
You can also slow-cook foods that require longer cooking
periods using the after-heat. After a few tries, you will learn
to use the right amount of firewood and to get the best
cooking temperatures to suit your needs. Becoming a good
baking oven user can take some practice. Here's to success
and great cooking!
Temperature of baking oven in different firing
situations
Light the fireplace according to your cooking/baking needs.
With maximum firing using 17.5 kilos (38.6 lbs) of firewood,
and when the fireplace was also heated the previous day, the
temperature of the baking oven will be above 200 ºC (392
ºF) for approximately 5 hours. Correspondingly, when heat-
ed with three loads (13 kilos, or 29 lbs), the baking oven's
temperature will remain below 200 ºC (392 ºF), which is
quite sufficient for casseroles and other slow-cooked foods.
In the latter firing test, the fireplace was not heated the pre-
vious day, which is why the initial temperature was lower
than in the maximum heating test. See image 2.
Keep an eye on the grate thermometer. Casseroles can al-
so be cooked at lower temperatures, though this involves a
