of the loaded battery falls back to its rated value, this indicates a high internal
resistance or a high level of sulphation.
Step 7 "U2-phase (trickle charge)": If the battery remains connected to the
charger, a trickle charge is performed in accordance with the charging mode and the
battery voltage is thus charged to 13.8 V. This step is performed a different number of
times in accordance with the charging mode.

9. Preparation, connection and operation

Important! Connecting batteries incorrectly, short-circuiting batteries and improper
handling of the battery and charger are potential sources of danger. Make sure that all
preparations are made properly.
• Every time you use your charger, first check that its cables are not damaged.
Never start using the device if the protective insulation on the power cord or
charging cable is damaged (crushed, torn, sheared off etc.).
• Before charging, check whether the battery for charging is a 12 V battery.
• Explosive gases may accumulate near to the floor. Position the charger as high
as possible and never any closer to the floor than necessary. Do not position it
directly on or in the direct vicinity of the battery. During the charging process,
make sure that the room is sufficiently ventilated.
• If you are working with batteries which are not maintenance-free, it is
recommended that the battery be removed from the vehicle, as emitted battery
acid mist may otherwise damage the vehicle, for instance. Adhere to the
manufacturer specifications on removal of the battery.
• Open the caps on the individual cells of batteries which are not maintenance-
free before charging (we recommend cleaning the surface of the battery
beforehand to prevent dirt from getting into the battery). Allow the battery
housing to air for approximately 2 minutes so that any flammable gases can
evaporate.
• The acid level must be checked on lead batteries that are not maintenance-free.
If the acid level is too low, top up with deionised water until the level reaches the
respective filling mark. Leave the cells open during the entire charging process
so that any emitted gases can escape.
• If the battery contacts are difficult to access or the terminals of the charger
could come into contact with adjacent components, the battery will need to be
removed. Adhere to the manufacturer specifications on removal of the battery.
• Make sure that the charger is initially not connected to the mains socket.
• It is imperative to adhere to the following connection sequence:
