RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE
The way the loudspeakers behave depends on the room's acoustics, the positioning of the loudspeakers within the room and
the listener's location. You can tweak each of these elements to correct or improve a desired effect.
The stereophonic perception is imprecise and poorly centred: try to move the loudspeakers closer to each other and/or point
them towards the listening point (fig. 13).
The sound is "harsh", aggressive: the room's acoustics are probably too reverberant. Consider using sound-absorbing
materials (rugs, sofa, wall coverings, curtains, etc.) and sound-reflecting materials (furniture) to absorb or diffuse resonance.
The sound is "flat", strangled: there are too many sound-absorbing materials in the room; the sound is soaked up and has
no depth. Aim for a better balance between the absorbent and reflective materials within the room. In general, aim to have a
reflective wall behind the loudspeakers so that the sound develops correctly. The wall behind the listening area, meanwhile,
will ideally be absorbent to prevent rear reflections from "contaminating" the perception of the stereo image. Furniture can be
placed judiciously on the side walls to diffuse the sound waves and therefore ensure certain frequency ranges are not excited,
particularly in the midrange (suppression of flutter echoes).
Choosing the location
The loudspeakers have been developed to deliver the most accurate sound reproduction, whether they are used for stereo
music or Home Cinema. However, a few simple rules should be followed to optimise their performance and to guarantee good
tonal balance and a realistic sound image.
The loudspeakers should be positioned symmetrically opposite the listening position, ideally so that they form an equilateral
triangle with it. You can, however, vary these distances to find the perfect compromise according to specific room layouts
(fig. 13).
The loudspeakers should be positioned at the same height in the same horizontal plane. Ideally the tweeter will be positioned
at the listener's ear level, at the usual listening point (fig. 14).
Do not place the loudspeakers too close to a corner of the room and avoid placing them close to a wall. This will have the
effect of exciting certain resonances of the room and artificially increasing the bass level. On the other hand, if the bass level
is deemed insufficient, you can try moving the loudspeakers closer to the walls to rebalance it (fig. 15).
Our products are carefully designed and manufactured in our factories with great attention to detail. Each product has an
initial stereo setting with the Primary speaker on the left and the Secondary speaker on the right. With the Focal & Naim app,
the initial stereo setting can be modified according to the location of the speakers to adjust the stereo.
ADAPT Room Calibration
To go further, a room acoustic correction function is available in the settings menu of the Focal & Naim application. (fig. 13)
Grille
The DIVA UTOPIA loudspeakers are supplied with grilles to protect the midrange speaker driver. They are easy to fit or
remove thanks to their magnetic attachment system. We advise removing them when you are listening to music to get the
best performance from your loudspeakers. The grilles over the bass units on the sides of the loudspeakers are not detachable.
Stand-by mode
The DIVA UTOPIA loudspeaker can go into standby mode if the product is not used for 20 minutes. However, to configure the
loudspeakers so that they automatically go into standby mode after a certain time, browse the settings in the Focal & Naim
app. If the Focal Logo on the front panel is dim, this indicates that the loudspeaker is in standby mode.
Running-in period
The speaker drivers used in the DIVA UTOPIA loudspeakers are complex mechanical assemblies which need a running-
in period to operate at their best and to become acclimatised to the temperature and humidity of your environment.
This running-in period varies depending on the conditions in question and may take several weeks. To reduce this time, we
recommend operating the loudspeakers for about twenty consecutive hours. Once the loudspeaker's characteristics have fully
stabilised, you will be able to enjoy the full potential of your DIVA UTOPIA loudspeakers.
