2.4. Enamel etching
The enamel surface is etched with the etching gel. A characteristic surface relief with
20 µm deep crevices is obtained through selective dissolution of the enamel prism. This results
in an increased surface area due to roughening and permits intimate mechanical interlocking
with the adhesive. Use only a dabbing action, do not rub the etching gel onto the enamel.
The required etching time is at least 15 seconds. In special cases e.g. in cases of heavily fluoridated
teeth, the etching time must be extended by at least 10 seconds.
Avoid etching gel contact with the gingiva, skin, eyes and dentin.
2.5. Rinsing off etching gel residue and drying the etched surfaces
Etching gel residues must be rinsed off with a strong jet of water (at least 5 seconds for each
tooth). If a combined air and water syringe is used to dry the teeth, it is essential that air from
the compressor contain no oil. In case of doubt, special ether-based drying agents or a modified
dryer should be used to dry the teeth. The clinical criterion of satisfactory etching is a uniform
frosty white appearance of etched teeth.
The etched surfaces should not be touched and must be kept dry and clean!
2.6. Selection, bonding and adaptation of brackets
Metal, ceramic or plastic brackets may be used. The curvature of the base must correspond to
that of the tooth surface to be bonded.
2.6.1. Bonding with plastic brackets
When using the NO-MIX or MIX-adhesive, the special primer (REF 163-500-00) for
Elegance
plastic brackets must be applied. The primer supplies a chemical bond
®
between the plastic bracket and the adhesive.
Procedure: with a small brush, located in the lid of the jar, apply a thin and even layer of primer
to the base of the bracket. For best bonding results we recommend applying the adhesive
within 30 seconds. The maximum drying time of 60 seconds should not be exceeded.
