1. Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of the new LiPo SAVER 2...6S / LiPo SAVER 2...6S - 60A.
We are delighted that you have chosen a product from the MULTIPLEX range.
This product is far more than just a new sensor: it also represents a useful safety enhancement.
LiPo, LiIo and LiFe cells are not immune to the effects of ageing, and one possible result of this is differences
in individual cell capacities. The problem may well be overlooked initially, as it is most noticeable only when the
battery has been discharged.
In the ideal case - i.e. when the battery is new and in good condition - the voltage of all the cells in the pack
declines in a virtually identical manner. Your speed controller will throttle back the motor when the battery falls to
the previously programmed low-voltage limit; if you are using a telemetry link, a warning will be generated in that
way. However, if the battery is old, in poor condition or actually defective, there will often be a wide variation in the
capacity and voltage curve of the individual cells. It may well be that the overall pack voltage is still in the ideal
range even when one of the cells is almost completely discharged. If this should happen, the speed controller's
automatic cut-off circuit would not be triggered, and it would continue to deliver the current demanded from the
battery. In the worst case the eventual result could be a sudden collapse of the overall pack voltage, causing
permanent damage to the battery and a crashed model.
Important note: it is the weakest cell of a LiPo battery which limits the pack's current delivery capacity.
Your new LiPo SAVER 2...6S can now provide protection to you and your model from the harmful consequences of
individual cell low-voltage conditions. The LiPo SAVER monitors the state of each cell in the battery very precisely,
and constantly informs your MULTIPLEX M-LINK radio control system of the voltage of the weakest cell. The
low-voltage safety warning is triggered in two stages (absolute low voltage for the selected battery type and early
warning threshold).
In addition to its basic function, the LiPo SAVER 2...6S - 60A version is also able to measure the current actually
flowing, and to display the calculated residual capacity of the battery (electronic fuel gauge). The current actually
flowing is included in the sensor's assessment of the low-voltage situation, and dynamically adjusts the low
voltage warning threshold to suit.
The automatic residual capacity detection circuit ensures safe operation even when a part-discharged battery is
used.
