6) Use the rotary knob PM2 to adjust the thresh-
old value. If this value is exceeded, the ampli-
fication is reduced. Use the control PM3 to
adjust the compression ratio. For example, a

compression ratio of
an input level increase of 20 dB above the
threshold value the output level will only be
increased by 2 dB.
7) To exit the submenu, press the knob ESC.
8) Use the rotary knob PM1/ ENTER to select
the next menu item and press the knob to
confirm.

9) Use the rotary knob PM1 to adjust the attack
time. Use the rotary knob PM2 to adjust the
release time, i. e. the time until the amplifica-
tion has reached its original value again in
case a level has fallen below the threshold
value. The control PM3 allows to define if the
change to compression is to be made

sition range
(Soft Knee) when the
threshold value is exceeded. The value
defines the size of the transition range.

5.4.8 Adjusting the amplification (Gain)

The level of an output signal may be adapted via
the adjustment of the gain in the range -18 dB
up to +18 dB. A level attenuation caused by the
compressor can thus be balanced.
1) Select an output with its button EDIT/ MUTE
(6).
Gain
2) Select the menu item
knob PM1/ ENTER and press the knob to
confirm. The present adjustment is shown
ƊGain = 0.0dB
(e. g.
).
3) Adjust the desired gain with the rotary knob
PM2. A change is effective immediately.
4) To exit the submenu, press the knob ESC.

5.4.9 Level limitation (Limiter)

The limiter allows to quickly limit the signal to an
adjusted level. Thus, the power amplifiers are
protected against overload and the speakers are
protected against damage. It operates similar to
the compressor described before. However,
while the compressor still allows an increase of
the output level depending on the compression
rate adjusted, the threshold value of the limiter
defines the absolute upper limit of the output sig-
nal (compression ratio = ∞ : 1).
The limiter responds to the peak values of
the signals. The activity of the limiter is shown by
the LED LIMIT of the output indication (9). In
addition, it is possible to show the level reduction
caused by the limiter instead of the output level
(
chapter 5.4.11).
1) Select an output with its button EDIT/ MUTE
(6).
2) The adjustments of the limiter are divided into

two menu items
. Select the first of
them with the rotary knob PM1/ ENTER and
press the knob to confirm.

time, and the rotary knob PM2 to adjust the
release time, i. e. the time until the amplifica-
tion has reached its original value again if the
level has fallen below the threshold value.
Use the rotary knob PM3 to adjust the thresh-
old value, i. e. the output level admitted as a
maximum. If this value is exceeded, the
amplification is reduced.
7) To exit the submenu, press the knob ESC.

5.4.10 Phase reversal (Polarity)

The signal of an output may be inverted (phase
reversal), e. g. to balance a reverse polarity
when connecting the speakers.
1) Select an output with its button EDIT/ MUTE
(6).
2) Use the rotary knob PM1/ ENTER to select
the menu item
knob to confirm.
The present adjustment is shown, e. g.
ƊPolarity = Normal
3) Use the rotary knob PM2 to define if the out-
put signal is to be inverted (

4) To exit the submenu, press the knob ESC.

5.4.11 LED indication (Vu-Meter)

The LED indication of each output can show the
with the rotary
level reduction by the compressor or limiter
instead of the output level. To select the type of
indication:
1) Select an output with its button EDIT/ MUTE
(6).
2) Use the rotary knob PM1/ ENTER to select
the menu item
knob to confirm.
The present adjustment is shown, e. g.

indication:

Independent of the selected adjustment, the
LED LIMIT always lights up when the compres-
sor or limiter limits the level.

5.5 Configuration memory
(Program Utilities)
The adjustments made at the DSM-480LAN are
maintained after switching-off. In addition, there
is the possibility to memorize up to 24 configura-
tions as "Program" in the unit. Not only the
adjustments made in the menus for the inputs
and outputs are memorized but also the muting
of the inputs and outputs.
It is also possible to access these configura-
tions memorized in the unit by means of the
remote control of the DSM-480LAN via a com-
puter (
chapter 6.8.4).

5.5.1 Memorizing a configuration

As a prompt to enter a name the upper line
of the display shows:

flashes. To maintain the previous name, pro-
ceed with step 6).
5) Use the rotary knob PM2 to change the flash-
ing character. Use the rotary knob PM1 to
select the next character to be changed in
each case.
The name of a configuration may consist
of 16 characters as a maximum. Upper-case
letters and lower-case letters from the ASCII
character set, numerals as well as some spe-
cial characters are available.
6) Stop entering the name by pressing the knob
ENTER. To memorize the configuration,
press the knob ENTER once again (or cancel
the procedure by pressing the knob ESC).
During memorizing, the display shows:
Saving to Memory....
7) To exit the submenu, press the knob ESC.

5.5.2 Loading a configuration

CAUTION
Prior to loading a configuration,
always check if it corresponds with
the speaker constellation con-
nected.
Due to the flexible possibilities of configuration
of the DSM-480LAN, e. g. an output configured
for controlling a tweeter may become the bass
frequency output after loading another configu-
ration. In this case there is the risk of overload
for a tweeter connected to this output
To load a configuration memorized before:
1) To call the menu, press the knob UTILITY (5).
