is active and attenuates the dynamic range of
the output signal
"Vu-Meter Mode" = "Level"
The lower five LEDs show (according to the
imprint) the absolute output level. If the LED
CLIP lights up, the output is overloaded. In
this case reduce the level by attenuation of
the amplification (gain) for this output. The
LED CLIP may also light up if an overload
occurs for the sound control in case of
extreme filter adjustments.
"Vu-Meter" = "Limiter Act"
The lower five LEDs show, from top to bot-
tom, the level attenuation by the limiter. For
this kind of display the LED CLIP lights up
continuously and does not show the overload
of the output.
"Vu-Meter" = "RMS Cmp Act"
The lower five LEDs show, from top to bot-
tom, the level attenuation by the compressor.
For this kind of display the LED CLIP lights up
continuously and does not show the overload
of the output.

2 Safety Notes
The unit corresponds to all relevant directives of
the EU and is therefore marked with
WARNING The unit is supplied with haz-
ardous mains voltage. Leave serv-
icing to skilled personnel only. Do
not insert anything through the air
vents. Inexpert handling or modifi-
cation of the unit may cause an
electric shock hazard.
It is essential to observe the following items:
G
The unit is suitable for indoor use only. Protect
it against dripping water and splash water,
high air humidity, and heat (admissible ambi-
ent temperature range 0 – 40 °C).
G
Do not place any vessels filled with liquid, e. g.
drinking glasses, on the unit.
G
The heat being generated in the unit must be
carried off by air circulation. Therefore, the air
vents must not be covered.
G
Do not set the unit into operation, and imme-
diately disconnect the mains plug from the
mains socket if
1. there is visible damage to the unit or to the
mains cable,
2. a defect might have occurred after a drop or
similar accident,
3. malfunctions occur.
The unit must in any case be repaired by
skilled personnel.
G
Never pull the mains cable to disconnect the
mains plug from the mains socket, always
seize the plug.
G
For cleaning only use a dry, soft cloth, never
use chemicals or water.
G
No guarantee claims for the unit and no liabil-
ity for any resulting personal damage or mate-
rial damage will be accepted if the unit is used
for other purposes than originally intended, if it
is not correctly connected or operated, or not
repaired in an expert way. Likewise, no liabil-
ity will be accepted for data loss caused by
operating errors or by a defect and for any
consequential damage of this data loss.

Important for U. K. Customers!
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in
accordance with the following code:
green / yellow = earth
blue = neutral
brown = live
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of
this appliance may not correspond with the
coloured markings identifying the terminals in
your plug, proceed as follows:
1. The wire which is coloured green and yel-
low must be connected to the terminal in the
plug which is marked with the letter E or by
the earth symbol
,
or coloured green or
green and yellow.
2. The wire which is coloured blue must be
connected to the terminal which is marked
with the letter N or coloured black.
3. The wire which is coloured brown must be
connected to the terminal which is marked
with the letter L or coloured red.
Warning – This appliance must be earthed.
If the unit is to be put out of operation
definitively, take it to a local recycling
plant for a disposal which will not be
harmful to the environment.
3 Applications
The DSM-480LAN is a digital signal processor
with four inputs (analog or digital) and eight out-
.
puts. It is provided as a link between a mixer and
the power amplifiers of a PA system and com-
bines the functions of crossover networks, equal-
izers, delays, compressors and limiters. Due to
its versatile possibilities of configuration it can be
used in most different speaker arrangements.
24 configurations can each be memorized in
the unit and on the supplied memory chip card
and recalled, if required. Via the supplied soft-
ware the DSM-480LAN can in addition be con-
veniently remote-controlled via a computer. The
computer is connected via the USB interface,
Ethernet or an RS-485 data bus. Up to 32 units
can be controlled via Ethernet or RS-485.
The following adjustments are possible for each
input channel:
– gain [-18...+18 dB]
– signal source: analog input, digital input or a
test signal generated internally (white noise/
pink noise)
– Noise Gate
– parametric equalizer with 5 filters
(17 filter types each for selection)
– delay [max. 849 ms], to be entered as an indi-
cation of time (ms) or distance (m)
– muting
The following adjustments are possible for each
output channel:
– assignment to an input signal or to the mixed
signal of several inputs
– high pass filter and low pass filter with 17 fil-
ter characteristics of different slopes to create
crossover networks
– parametric equalizer with 7 filters
(17 filter types each for selection)
– delay [max. 849 ms], to be entered as an indi-
cation of time (ms) or distance (m)
– compressor
– gain [-18...+18 dB]
– peak limiter [-10...+20 dBu]
– phase reversal
– muting
4 Setting up and
Connecting the Unit
The DSM-480LAN is provided for rack mounting
(482 mm / 19") but it can also be used as a table-
top unit. For rack installation 1 rack space is
required (rs = rack space = 44.45 mm).
Prior to connecting or changing existing connec-
tions switch off the DSM-480LAN and the units
to be connected.
4.1 Signal sources
Connect analog signal sources with line level,
e. g. the output of a preamplifier or a mixer, to the
XLR jacks INPUTS A to D (21). The jacks are
provided for balanced signals; the contact con-
figuration is shown in figure 2. For connection of
sources with unbalanced signals use adapters
with the XLR contacts 1 and 3 bridged.
Connect digital signal sources with an output
according to the S / PDIF standard to the jacks
S / PDIF (19). Analog and digital input signals can
only be alternatively processed per input chan-
nel (selecting a signal source,

chapter 5.3.2).
