14. Troubleshooting

Warning:
Turn switch off and always remove plug from the power source before trouble shooting.
Fault
Quill returns too slowly or too
quickly
Chuck wiII not stay attached to
spindle. It falls off when trying to
install.
Noisy operation
Wood splinters on underside.
Workpiece tom loose from hand.
Drill bit bums.
Drill leads off or hole not round.
Drill bit binds in work piece.
Excessive drill bit run- out or
wobble.

Problem
Spring has improper tension
Dirt, grease or oil on the tapered
inside surface of the chuck or on the
spindle's tapered surface.
Incorrect belt tension
Dry spindle.
Loose spindle pulley
Loose motor pulley.
No "backup material" behind work
piece.
Not supported or clamped property.
Incorrect speed.
Chips not coming out of hole.
Dull drill bit
Feeding too slowly
Hard grain in wood or lengths of
cutting lips and/or angle not equal
Bent drill bit.
Work piece pinching drill bit or
excessive feed pressure.
Improper belt tension.
Bent drill bit
Heavy wear of spindle bearings
Drill bit not properly installed in
chuck.
Chuck not properly installed.
Solution
Adjust spring tension. See "Quill return
spring".
Using household detergent, clean the
tapered surfaces of chuck and spindle
to remove all dirt, grease and oil. See
"Installing the chuck".
Adjust belt tension. See "Choosing speed
and belt tensioning".
Test and lubricate spindle. See
"Lubrication"
Check tightness of retaining nut on pulley,
and tighten if necessary
Tighten set screw in motor pulley
Use "backup material". See "Positioning
table and work piece".
Support work piece or clamp it.
Change speed. See "Choosing speed and
belt tensioning".
Retract drill bit frequently to remove chips.
Resharpen drill bit.
Feed fast enough ta allow drill bit to cut.
Resharpen drill bit correctly.
Replace drill bit.
Support work piece and clamp it. See
"Positioning table and work piece".
Adjust belt tension. See "Choosing speed
and belt tensioning".
Use a straight drill bit.
Replace bearings.
Install drill properly. See "Installing drill
bits".
Install chuck properly. See "Installing the
chuck".
