Test tips before every use
According to the applicable safety standards in the country of use, shackles should be regu-
larly checked. This is necessary because in every day use the products can be exposed to
factors such as wear, improper use, overloading etc., which can lead to deformations or
changes in their material structure. The test should be conducted at least every 12 months,
more frequently, however, under extreme conditions of use.
Over and above that, shackles must be subject to a visual inspection before each use. It
should be ensured that:
• all markings are legible
• body and bolt are the same size, type and quality grade
• the threads on the bolt and body are not damaged
• on shackles with a continuous bolt, the locking pin is intact
• body and bolt are not deformed or overly worn
• body and bolt are free of cracks, grooves, notches, corrosion or other material defects
• the shackle is not exposed to any source of heat, as this leads to the material relaxing and
hence has a negative impact on the working load limit (WLL)
• the shackle is never welded, heated or bent, as this has a negative effect on the working
load limit (WLL).
