Alpine Classic Crocodile Loco,
Sound, Collector Edition
THE PROTOTYPE
In 1931, the famous "Compagnie
Internationale des Wagons Lits et
des Grands Express Europeens"
(CIWL) and the Montreux-Berner
Oberland-Bahn (MOB) together
introduced the "Golden Mountain
Pullman Express." Catering to
wealthy tourists, the luxury train
was intended to operate with two
salon cars and a dining car from
the Berner Oberland to Montreux
on Lake Geneva. Four luxurious
Pullman cars were built, but the
depression of the 1930s left the
train without a public able to
afford its luxury. The cars were
sold to the Rhätische Bahn
(RhB), where they were used on
regular passenger trains. Recent-
ly, these remarkable examples of
Art Deco design were completely
refurbished.
Today, the RhB offers the salon
cars as a special train called the
"Alpine
Classic
Express," pulled by one of the
famous "Crocodile" electric locos
of the RhB. Groups can rent the
train and enjoy the luxurious style
of the 1920s while travelling
through the magnificent scenery
of the Swiss Alps.
