The height of the value is above all dependent on the position of the sun (and also on the season and the geographical
latitude). Furthermore there are of course other factors which play varying roles (atmosphere, weather, cloud cover,
altitude, reflection/dissipation on water, sand or snow etc).
The maximum value is reached at midday when there is no cloud cover (take into account summer time / daylight savings
time!). The higher the UV index, the higher the risk of sunburn (or respectively, the shorter the time it takes to become
sunburnt).
Depending on the skin type, there are different times until sunburn occurs.
An overview of different skin types is available on the next page.
Examples for skin type II for untanned skin in Central Europe:
UVI 0 to 1:
Low UV strength, sunburn unlikely, no protection measures necessary
UVI 2 to 4:
Medium UV strength, sunburn possible after 30 minutes, sun protection measures are advisable.
UVI 5 to 7:
High UV strength, sunburn possible after 20 minutes, sun protection measures are necessary.
UVI 8 and above:
Very high UV strength, sunburn possible after less than 20 minutes, sun protection measures are
absolutely necessary.
