STARTER SYSTEM TEST (Micro500XL)
NOTE: When testing older model diesel engines in cold
weather, preheating and post heating of the glow plug may
skew test results. Warm up the engine for 5 minutes before
the test.
If you selected the IN-VEHICLE battery test using the Micro500XL, the
display will toggle between the battery test result and the starter system
test screen. The Micro500XL will integrate the results of the battery test
with the starter diagnosis.
1. To begin the test, press ENTER.
2. The analyzer will prompt you to start the engine.
3. As the voltage rises, the analyzer will display one of the following
results:
CHARGE BATTERY
The starter voltage is low and battery is discharged. Fully charge the
battery and repeat the starter system test.
CRANKING VOLTAGE LOW (with voltage level)
The starter voltage is low and the battery is fully charged.
CRANKING VOLTAGE NORMAL (with voltage level)
The starter voltage is normal and the battery is fully charged.
REPLACE BATTERY
(if the battery test result is REPLACE or BAD CELL): The battery must
be replaced before testing the starter. Press ENTER to perform the
charging system test.
If the battery is good and fully charged and the vehicle will not start,
see "Starter Problems."
Starter Problems
With the vehicle lights on:
If the engine does not crank and the lights dim heavily, check the
connections to ensure the wiring is clean and in good condition. If the
wiring is in good condition, repair or replace the starter.
