1. Checking the instrument

Unpack the PregTector carefully, keeping the packing materials safety in case they should be
needed at any time in the future for returning the instrument for service. In the outer packaging
shows any sign of damage in transit, please immediately inform or the dealer from whom the
PregTector was purchased.
The following are the standard parts which should be in the package:
1. Instrument carry case
2. Headset
3. Probe containing circuit and battery
4. Plastic bottle of coupling medium (liquid paraffin)
5. Instruction manual
6. Instruction cassette
In the unlikely event that any parts are missing or damaged, please immediately inform or the
dealer form whom the instrument was purchased.

2. Before using the PregTector

Plug the headset into the lead coming from the probe, put on the headset and adjust it to be a
comfortable fit. Turn the volume controls to maximum. Release the switch and put a quantity of
coupling medium on the probe-face. Apply the probe to your own chest, next to the skin, over the
heart, which will normally be between the left nipple and the breastbone. Depress the switch, and
your own heartbeat should be clearly heard. Should the "click" of the instrument being switched on
not be heard, not the low hiss indicating that it is switched on, change the battery. It is possible for
batteries to be damaged during transit. Always use a alkaline battery.
Before trying to use the PregTector on a sow, listen to the instruction cassette, and reed this
manual.

3. Using the PregTector

A) First attempts on Pregnant sows.
Don't begin by trying to test a doubtful gilt just four weeks served, but start if possible in the
farrowing house, on a quest sow waiting to farrow. This will be easier because the uterus is of
course quite big by now, and also because there will usually be more space in the farrowing house
than in sow stalls.
Always try to test animals when they are as quiet as possible. This will minimize noise caused by the
sow's movements, which will make identification of the sounds more difficult, especially for an
inexperienced operator. Try also to avoid as far as possible the first four hours after feeding, to
minimize noise caused by digestive process. There is no need for the sow to be standing up, as
with some other detectors. If there is no sow waiting to farrow which is quiet, it is best to wait until
there is. It is rarely if ever essential tot test any animal at any particular time and as with many other
tasks you will do with animals, pregnancy testing is much on non-stressed, calm sows.
