Safe Practice
Introduction
Gas-charged accumulators bearing the CE mark are
approved for use within the European Union.
These accumulators must not be used with a Group 1 fluid.
These bladder accumulators, classified in Categories II to IV
depending on volume and pressure, are designed to contain
Group 2 (non-hazardous) fluids. They have been subjected to
conformity assessment procedures in accordance with the
European Directive 97/23/EC concerning pressure equipment.
Parker's bladder accumulators are designed, manufactured
and tested to the highest standards, to guarantee their safety.
The user must follow strictly the instructions given in this manual.
Parker Hannifin does not accept any responsibility for damage
to persons or property, or for any consequences, eg: loss of
operation, resulting from the failure to observe these instructions.
Delivery, Handling and Storage Conditions
Delivery
Bladder accumulators are delivered either:
– pre-charged with nitrogen to a pressure of approx. 2.5 bar;
– pre-charged with nitrogen to a pressure calculated to meet
the conditions of use for immediate service.
The pre-charge value is indicated on a label attached to the
accumulator. Depending on the size and quantity ordered, the
accumulators are delivered on pallets or in cartons.
Handling
The original packaging is suitable for general handling and
storage of standard accumulators. Suitable lifting gear should
be used to support the weight of the accumulator(s). The gas
valve must be protected from impact. Handle with care.
Storage
Bladder accumulators should be stored in the horizontal position.
Accumulators of less than 4 litres volume may be stacked two units
high; the original packaging is not suitable for stacking larger units.
Storage conditions should be according to the table on page 3.
Do not expose to heat or flames. Where storage has exceeded
six years, it is essential that all elastomeric parts should be
replaced before commissioning.
Labelling and Marking
Labelling – Accumulator Nameplate
The following information is shown on the nameplate:
– CE logo
– identification number of the notified body
– manufacturer's logo
– product symbol
– date of manufacture: month/year
– accumulator reference numbers
– essential minimum, maximum and allowable limits for:
– temperature range TS in degrees Celsius,
– maximum permissible pressure PS in bar,
– warning messages
– nominal volume of accumulator in litres

Markings on the Shell of the Accumulator
Because of its classification in Risk Categories II to IV of
Directive 97/23/EC depending on volume and pressure, the
accumulator shell bears the following markings, located in an
area of low stress:
– name and logo of manufacturer of shell
– year of production
– shell serial number
– maximum allowable pressure PS in bar
– allowable temperature range TS in degrees Celsius
– volume in litres
– fluid group
– test pressure PT in bar
– test date: year/month
– CE logo
– identification number of the notified body
The following are strictly prohibited:
– changing the markings without the prior authorization of
the accumulator shell manufacturer;
– engraving or hard stamping in the cylindrical part of the
accumulator.
Where complementary markings for specific acceptance
conditions are required, the manufacturer will provide these in
the hemispherical low stress area after initial assembly.
Marking of accumulator accessories
Where necessary, the accessories will show the following
markings in part or in full:
– CE logo
– identification of manufacturer
– index of casting and date of fabrication: year/week
– maximum allowable pressure PS in bar
– fluid group
Installation
Before installation, it is important to carry out a visual inspection
of the bladder accumulator to detect any damage.
For optimum performance, the accumulator must be placed as
close as possible to the user device. It should be mounted vertically
with the gas charging valve uppermost or, in exceptional
circumstances, can be mounted horizontally – see catalogue
HY07-1235 or contact the factory for further information.
It is strongly recommended that a Parker ASB accumulator safety
block is used in conjunction with the accumulator. This ensures
users and equipment are protected from damage due to pressure
spikes. In addition, it allows quick and safe accumulator main-
tenance through easy shut-off and discharge. See catalogue
HY07-1241 or consult your sales office for further information.
In addition:
– Beware of parts which may be ejected as a result of a
ruptured bladder: keep hands and body out of line of port.
– Check the environmental conditions and, if necessary, protect
from heat, electrical or magnetic fields, lightning, damp etc.
– Allow a space of 200mm above the valve to permit access
for the charging and gauging apparatus.
– Maintain access to the bleed orifice and gas valve.
– Leave all markings in clear view.
– Install such that no abnormal force is brought to bear on the
pipework connected directly or indirectly to the accumulator.
