6.4 Casting
Due to their shape the ingots can be placed easily into
the ceramic crucibles. Use ceramic crucibles only.
®
a) HF-casting unit (e.g. Degutron
): Do not use gra-
phite or carbon crucibles. After a time of further heating
of 5 – 7 s, depending on the quantity of alloy, casting is
carried out before the oxide skin tears up.
b) Flame-melting (e.g. Motorcast
®
compact): melt with
the reducing flame of a propane-oxygen mixture. After
exceeding the liquidus temperature and a period of
continued heating – 5 – 15 s depending on the alloy
quantity – begin casting.
®
c) Arc (e.g. Degumat
): melt with the arc on step 3 – 4.
Begin the casting process after a period of further hea-
ting – 2 – 7 s depending on the alloy quantity. Since
®
melting in the Degumat
unit is carried out under pro-
tective gas (argon), no oxide film is formed on the melt.
6.5 Devesting
After casting let the casting ring cool down at room
temperature for at least 20 min. Quenching in water is
not recommended because of the risk of deformation of
the casting. After devesting blast with blasting agent. In
order not to destroy the passivation layer on the surface,
CoCr alloys should not be pickled.
