CUTTING LOOSE WOOD
Loose wood includes any piece of wood such as a tree branch, felled tree trunk,
dimensional lumber, etc., that is not attached or anchored to another object.
1.
Clear the work area to make sure any piece of wood that is cut away does
not strike yourself, a bystander, an animal or property.
2.
Position the loose wood so it will not move.
Do not use a foot or hand to stablize the wood. You may end up in an
awkward position that can result in an injury if the wood breaks or if
you slip and come into contact with the pocket chainsaw.
3.
Position a longer piece of wood on top of a supporting structure. Make
sure the cut line is past the pivot point and most of the wood's weight
is behind the pivot point. This will stabilize the wood and prevent it from
collapsing during the cut.
4.
Once the cut is complete move the loose wood forward for the next cut.
CUTTING A TREE OR WOODEN STRUCTURE
These steps also apply to removing man-made wooden structures such as a
fence post or utility pole.
CUTTING A BRANCH
IMPORTANT! Never cut into the bulging branch collar. This will prevent
the tree from healing.
1.
Never stand under the branch you want to saw. When removing branches,
hold the equipment at a maximum angle of 60° to the horizontal to avoid
being hit by a falling branch.
2.
Start with the bottom branches on the tree. This will make it easier for the
cut branches to drop.
3.
Saw off long branches in several steps to keep control over the impact
location.
4.
Start cutting at the top of the branch to prevent it from pinching the
pocket chainsaw during the cut.
5.
Extend your reach by using ropes attached to the handles with a knot or
other secure method.
