Der Ende 1998 zum ersten Mal der Öffentlichkeit präsentierte
ICE 3, BR 403, entwickelte sich zum Aushängeschild für die
Deutsche Bahn AG. Bemerkenswert ist die Verwendung von 2
Steuerwagen bei diesen maximal achtteiligen Garnituren. Dabei
können die Fahrgäste in den ersten Reihen jeweils über den
Zugführer hinweg die Strecke beobachten, und das bei einem
Tempo bis zu 330 km/h.
Die Antriebseinheiten sind nicht mehr in den Steuerwagen,
sondern auf den ganzen Zug verteilt: Die Drehgestelle von jedem
zweiten Wagen werden einzeln von Motoren mit jeweils 500 kW
angetrieben.
Zusätzlich wurde aus dem ICE 3 der ICE-T mit Neigetechnik (BR
411) entwickelt.
Eine Besonderheit stellen auch die als BR 406 bezeichneten
Versionen mit Mehrstromsystemen dar, die nicht nur in Deutsch-
land, Österreich und der Schweiz, sondern auch in Frankreich
und den Benelux-Staaten betrieben werden können. Daher ist
es nicht verwunderlich, dass dieser Zug auch in die Niederlande
und Spanien exportiert wurde.

Information about the prototype
The ICE 3, class 403, presented to the public for the first time at
the end of 1998 developed into an advertisement for the German
Railroad, Inc.. A noticeable feature is the use of 2 cab control
cars with these trains, which have a maximum of 8 cars total.
These cab control cars allow passengers in the first row to look
over the engineer's shoulder down the track – at a speed of up to
330 km/h / 206 mph.
The power plants and traction motors are no longer in the cab
control cars; they are distributed along the length of the entire
train: The trucks on every other car are powered individually
by traction motors, each motor delivering 500 kilowatts / 670
horsepower.
In addition, the ICE-T with tilt-body technology (class 411) was
developed from the ICE 3.
The versions with multi-current systems, designated as the class
406, also represent something special. They can be run in France
and the Benelux countries as well as in Germany, Austria, and
Switzerland. It is therefore not surprising that this train has been
exported to the Netherlands and to Spain.
