Application:
1. Select the appropriate matrix band according to the
position of the preparation, as described above. Insert
the matrix in a conventional Tofflemire
Make sure that the inserted matrix is slightly tapered
towards the root surface and the matrix retainer faces
the mesial side.
2. Make sure that the thinned (matte finish) section of
the matrix faces outwards towards the adjacent tooth.
The thinned (matte finish) matrix suface must not face
inwards towards the preparation (see picture).
This is essential to achieving a smooth interproximal
restoration surface.
Example of a matrix band that has been inserted correctly – the
matte finished, thinned section of the matrix faces outwards.
3. For a two-surface Class II restoration, place the matrix in
such a way that the window is seated around the intact
contact on the uninvolved side (intact proximal area).
The window enables the matrix band to be placed
without separating the teeth in the contact area and
thereby facilitates the creation of consistently tight
contact points.
The window of the matrix fits around the intact contact point.
As a result, the tooth is not forced out of position in the contact
area (lower left first molar – restoration of a two-surface mesial
cavity; buccal view).
4. Carefully tighten the matrix. Caution: Excessive
tightening of the matrix may cause a tear in the
thinned section.

matrix retainer.
5. It is advisable to use interdental wedges for a reliable
seal of the gingival margin. The thinned metal band
eliminates the need for forceful separation of the teeth.
6. Complete the procedure according to the restorative
material manufacturer's instructions.
7. Remove the interdental wedges and undo the matrix
retainer before removing the matrix. Be aware of the
fact that there is a risk of gingival injury if the matrix is
torn while removing it.
Notes
– OptraMatrix is suitable for single use only.
– If a flowable composite is used as a first layer to line
the preparation and subsequently a contact point
instrument (e.g. OptraContact from Ivoclar Vivadent) is
employed, care should be taken to apply the flowable
composite only to the preparation and not to the matrix
band. If the flowable material comes in contact with
the matrix band, it may adhere to the matrix band
the band from being pressed against the adjacent tooth
with the contact point instrument.
