5.5.1 Electromechanical float switch
A single float switch is sufficient to control the on/off operation of the electric pump. Make sure you se-
lect a "drain" type float switch (open contact when it is down, closed contact when it is up). The same
type of float switch can be used as a device to signal that the liquid level in the basin is too high (this
could happen if the pump, for whatever reason, is unable to drain the basin). Remember that the single-
phase electric pumps are already equipped with an electromechanical control float (standard supply).
5.5.2 Multiple contact float switch
In the past, these devices were called "mercury bulb" float switches. After mercury was banned due to
pollution problems, new products were developed that reproduced its functionality without the use of
mercury. They are typically used in solids-laden waste water applications.
A single float switch is not sufficient to control the on/off operation of the electric pump. Therefore, two
control floats must be provided for each pump.
5.6 Auxiliary drain pump selection
Depending on the type of installation and the national/local codes and regulations, it may be necessary
to provide a small drain pump. This should be installed at a slightly lower level than the lifting station to
prevent flooding in the event of leaks or problems connected with the operation of the pumps connected
to the lifting station. It may also be necessary to provide an emergency power supply for the electric
pump (batteries with battery charger).
5.7 Lifting station mounted on the floor
Do not use the power cord to lift or move the lifting station or the electric pump
Position the lifting station on a horizontal floor surface capable of supporting the weight of the
station during its operation.
Adequate clearance must be provided around and above the lifting station to enable installation and
maintenance.
Install the condenser holder and/or electric panel in a sheltered position, well protected from the
weather; observe the limits specified in chapter 4.1
If you install the lifting station inside a building, you must provide adequate ventilation to prevent the buil-
dup of toxic or flammable gases (the cover on the lifting station is provided with vents).
For further information, refer to chapter 12.
5.8 Underground installation of lifting station
Do not use the power cord to lift or move the lifting station or the electric pump.
Do not position the lifting station directly on the ground. There must be no groundwater in the
selected area, and it must not be subject to flooding. There must be a suitable horizontal base,
capable of supporting the weight of the lifting station during its operation. Depending on the
characteristics of the ground, it may be necessary to provide enclosing walls made of brick,
cement or prefabricated components.
Do not drive vehicles or walk on the cover of the lifting station. The basin is not designed to
support weights.
Place a suitable cover over the hole to facilitate subsequent maintenance. If the station is installed out-
doors, provide adequate signs to warn of its presence, so as to prevent any accidental damage. Ade-
quate clearance must be provided around and above the lifting station to enable installation and mainte-
nance.
