Maintenance 4
Annual Maintenance
TM
The SECOND SUN
is designed for long‐term trouble‐free operation. Because of the nature of its use, and the
low maintenance requirements, it is important to provide scheduled maintenance. Below is a check‐ off list for
annual inspections.
1. Release the mounting cables and allow the heater to tilt back. This will allow adequate space to inspect
both the heater surface and the tank surface.
2. The tank surface should be clean; inspect for any paint chips, corrosion or paint delamination, and
repair to prevent potential corrosion on the tank surface.
3. The heater face should be clean and free of debris, ice, snow and insect nests. Perform a visual inspection
of the mounting hardware, all components, heater cabinet, catalytic cartridges and determine if there
is evidence of any physical damage, water contamination or missing parts. Inspect the face of the
catalytic cartridge(s) for any holes penetrating through the pad, loose fitting frame around the
perimeter, and loose or missing anchors. If holes are present, discontinue use immediately and contact
Algas‐SDI for repair. Gas can escape from holes in the cat material and support open flame
combustion.
4. Inspect for contaminants on the face of the cartridge, such as dirt, dust, oils or any other debris that
may have collected over the season. Do not attempt to clean the cartridge with chemicals, high
pressure air or water. Try to remove contaminants with low pressure air (<20 psi or <1.4 bar), directed
at a shallow angle to the catalytic pad surface.
5. Clean obstructions from the cover inlet and exhaust vents. If the exhaust and/or inlet vents are plugged,
the heater will not operate correctly a nd may not reach optimum temperature.
6. Check the condition of the heat sink on the outside of the cabinet and ensure it is not loose, or that
the cooling fins are not plugged with dirt or debris.
7. Take note of the condition of all seals: side seal, temperature switch band seal, and top edge cabinet
seal. The top edge cabinet seal should be replaced any time the tank heater is removed or if there is
evidence that the seal has leaked.
8. Check all electrical connections to ensure they are tight and unbroken. This includes the gas valve,
safety temperature switches, safety pressure switches, and the terminal strip. Clean any corrosion
from the contacts.
9. Disconnect both the main and pilot stainless flex tubing from the heater bulkhead fittings. Apply high
pressure shop air (around 100 psi or 6.9 bar) to both the pilot and main bulkhead fittings until air can
be heard flowing from the manifold jets.
10. Upon remounting the heater for service, avoid mounting over weld seams, as this could result in a
water leak path. Ensure that the top edge cabinet seal is sufficiently compressed to avoid any moisture
from entering below.
