The tool vibrates the surface through the base plate,
forcing the soil/gravel into a smaller physical space. The
surface material must be loose enough to allow movement
during compaction. Some surfaces may require preparation
before compacting.
A surface that is too hard can cause the tool to bounce instead
of compact. This may damage the tool or cause a vibration
injury over time due to repeated exposure. A bouncing
tamping rammer indicates the material is compact. Add
another layer of material if building up a compacted area.

PREPARING THE SURFACE

1.
Dry Surface – A dry surface will produce dust during
compaction. Sprinkle water over soil and allow it to soak in,
before resuming compaction. Only sprinkle enough water
on gravel to keep the dust down. This will extend the life of
the engine's air filter.
2.
Wet Surface – Soil that is too wet may stick to the base
plate. The sticking soil will then compact onto the tool
and cause excess weight that can put more stress on
the engine. It will also prevent the proper compaction of
the soil surface. Dry the surface or wait until it is suitable
for compaction.
3.
Asphalt - Wet the asphalt surface and base plate of
the tool to prevent the asphalt from sticking during
compaction. Dampen the surface and base plate
as needed.
4. Stones/Broken Concrete – Remove large stones or chunks
of concrete as the tamping rammer does not break these
apart. Larger stones and broken concrete may not
compact as much as expected. Compaction is more
effective with smaller objects.
