- Page 2 Installation Instructions Disconnect ground cable from battery. Raise the vehicle. Remove engine under cover, left hand mud guard, and drain cooling system. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connectors. Carefully lower the front exhaust pipe by removing the 6 attachment nuts to gain access to the threaded core plug (Refer to Subaru service manual for proper removal of front exhaust pipe). Insert the 17mm hex bit socket tool into the core plug and loosen. Remove core plug and drain remaining coolant. Discard drained coolant. NOTE: Be careful when removing plug as coolant may be hot. - Page 3 Coat threads of heater body with high temperature gasket Compound (26BR High Temp RTV Red Silicone Gasket Maker). Install Engine Block Heater into core plug opening and hang tighten until the gasket touches the engine block. Tighten the heater an additional 60 +/‐ 10 degrees to acquire a torque of 90 +/‐ 0.5 [N‐m] or 66 +/‐ 0.5 [ft‐lbs]. CAUTION: Failure to follow proper tightening procedures may allow coolant to leak onto the hot exhaust pipe and cause a fire, resulting in serious personal injury and property damage. Refer to Subaru Service manual for proper installation of front exhaust pipe. Re‐ install front exhaust pipe. Plug harness into heater element. Orient orange connector towards the front by twisting the orange connector inside the heater. Inside of heater can be rotated relative to the outer body. Use a gold wire tie to attach the block heater harness to the water pipe. CAUTION: Rotate metal hose clamp pinch tabs to ensure they do not contact the Engine Block Heater wire harness. - Page 4 5. Route the harness forward towards the right of the radiator. Use a gold wire tie to attach the block heater harness to the vehicle harness above the tow hook. Harness has white tape denoting location of gold wire tie to allow for proper engine movements. Use a gold wire tie to attach the block heater harness to the vehicle harness below the radiator fan connector. 7. - Page 5 Route the block heater harness towards the driver’s side of the vehicle. Use a gold wire tie to attach the block heater harness to the vehicle harness below the radiator fan connector. - Page 6 Route the block heater harness around left side of radiator toward the lower front grille area. Use a gold tie wrap to attach the wire harness to the vehicle harness at the tee‐section. Bundle any excess wire, as shown, to ensure it does not interfere with the active grille shutter or create any rattling or noise. Using 32mm hole saw, drill hole in lower front grille in the location shown. Reference template on Page 7 for grille cutout. Using male plug protector, attach male plug through drilled hole in lower front grille, insuring the harness is not twisted. Re‐install left hand mud guard and engine undercover. Lower the vehicle.
