1. General information
The SR 520 and SR 530 Hoods, and SR 580 Helmet can be
used together with the SR 500 Powered Air-Purifying Respirator
system of components to provide respiratory protection against
certain particulates, organic vapors, acid gases and other
inorganic gases. Refer to the NIOSH Approval Label for a list
of approved components and NIOSH cautions and limitations.
Before use, these user instructions and those for the SR 500
PAPR, cartridges, filters and compressed air attachment must
be thoroughly studied and understood.
Breathing air is supplied to the respiratory protection inlet
covering (e.g. hood, helmet) from a breathing hose connected
to the fan unit containing the appropriate canisters or filters. The
pressure generated in the hood or helmet prevents particles
and other pollutants from entering. The hood or helmet can
be used in all situations for which an air-purifying respirator is
recommended. This applies particularly to work that is hard,
warm or of long duration.
SR 520 and SR 530 Hoods
The SR 520 and SR 530 hoods protect the respiratory organs
and the crown of the head. They contain an impact-resistant
and chemical-resistant visor. The supply air keeps the hood
visor demisted. An adjustable head harness allows for fit
adjustments to improve fit and comfort. The flexible breathing
hose is permanently mounted to the hood. The SR 520 and SR
530 hoods are equipped with an exhalation valve that improves
comfort and reduces the buildup of carbon dioxide.

The SR 520 hood is available in two sizes, and the SR 530 hood
is available in one size. Additionally, the SR 530 also protects
the head and shoulders, is equipped with adjustable neck fit,
and the distance between the visor and the face is adjustable.
The SR 580 helmet protects the breathing zone and provide
limited head (ANSI Z89.1-2009 Type 1 Class G) and eye (ANSI
Z87.1-2010) protection. It contains a hinged visor unit and
scratch resistant and chemicals resistant polycarbonate visor.
The supply air flow keeps the visor demisted. An adjustable
head harness allows for fit adjustments to improve fit and
comfort. The flexible breathing hose is replaceable. The helmet
is equipped with an exhalation valve reduce the build up of
carbon dioxide. Equipped with standard fastener that allows
the use of hearing protection. The helmet is available in one
size and offers optional peel-offs and heat protection, welding
shield and welding protection.
Limitations
• If the face seal is not firmly in contact with the face, the
pressure necessary for maintaining the correct protection
factor will not be established.
• If the user is exposed to very high work intensity, a partial
vacuum may occur in the device during the inhalation phase,
which may involve the risk of leakage into the head-top.
• The protection factor may be reduced if the equipment is
used in surroundings in which high wind speeds occur.
• The seal of the head-top against the face must be assured.
This may be difficult to achieve if the user has a beard or
sideboards.
• Be aware that the breathing hose might make a loop and
get caught up by something in your surrounding.
• Never lift or carry the equipment by the breathing hose.
2. Safety Precautions
The user must read and follow all User Instructions supplied
with the SR 500 Powered Air-Purifying Respirator, respiratory
protection inlet coverings, canister, filter or supplied air equip-
ment. Incorrect operation of the SR 500 PAPR or supplied air
system could result in reduced airflow, interruption of airflow
to the respiratory protection inlet covering or contamination of
breathing air. For proper use: see supervisor, respirator pro-
gram manager, User Instructions, or for technical support call
Sundström in the U.S.A. and Canada at 1- 877- SUNDSTROM.
Failure to understand and observe the following warn-
ings and limitations may adversely affect respirator
performance and result in sickness or death
Do not use with parts or accessories other than those manu-
factured by Sundström as described in these User Instructions,
the SR 500 Powered Air-Purifying Respirator User Instructions,
or on the NIOSH Approval Label for the SR 500 PAPR system.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) Standard 29 CFR 1910.134 and the Canadian CSA
Standard Z94.4 require a written respirator program and
appropriate training before occupational use of this respirator.
