Laboratory Mill CD1
3.2 The actual milling
■ Weigh out 500 g of grain in the flask which was used during the
preparatory stage. The yields can thus be easily calculated
multiplying by 0.2. They correspond to yield obtained in flour-milling
with respect to wheat ground at B1.
■ The 500 g of grain are poured through the spout into the
feed-hopper at right. The spout which is removable has on the
bottom edge a magnet for catching metallic particles which were not
removed during the cleaning process.
Before each test, check the spout. If metallic particles are present,
remove the spout by unscrewing the star-knob and clean off with a
brush.
❏ Break: Start the grinding by turning the right-hand electric starting
switch (clockwise) which simultaneously controls the distributor
micro-motor and the grinder and sieve motor (make sure that the 2
electrical connectors are live.
Starting the distributor without simultaneously starting the grinder
will cause jamming.
❏ If this happens,
- Start the machine in the opposite direction.
- Clear away the products with a brush through the two sight-holes.
- Repeat this operation several times until the pulley turns freely.
- Replace the cover and start up again.
Grinding time varies with the size of the grain (or the weight of 1000
grains). This takes about 3 minutes.
After grinding 500 g, wait approximately 1 mn 30 so that the sieving
is completed. empty the sieve.
Three main fractions are obtained:
❏ at the end, coarse and fine brans.
❏ coarse semolina in the right-hand collecting-pan.
❏ break flour in the left-hand collecting-pan.
