Operating Instructions
Roots vacuum pumps
Pump ranges
These operating instructions concern the
following contact-less operating Roots
vacuum pumps: Models VWP 500,
VWP 1000 and VWP 1500
The vacuum capacities at atmosphere
3
are 485, 1072 and 1580 m
/hr operating
on 50 cycles. The pumping curves which
show max. compression ratio against pre-
vacuum, can be found in data sheet D 200.
Description (picture
)
Roots pumps are two shaft, rotary piston
pumps, where two symmetrical rotary pistons
are rotating in opposite directions in a
housing and are synchronised by a pair of
toothed gears.
The pumping chamber of Roots pumps is
oil free. The synchronised drive gears
and the bearings for the rotors are oil
lubricated. The drive gears and the bear-
ings are fitted into the two end chambers
which also contain the oil tanks.
Both the end chambers are separated
from the pumping chamber using laby-
rinth seals. Both oil tanks are designed so
that all rotational speeds, bearings and
gears are supplied with the correct amount
of oil.
An integral unloading valve (C) gives the automatic facility to start the Roots pump at the same time as the backing pump.
Consequently when starting, an overload of the drive motor can be avoided.
The VWP has a protection mesh on the inlet. High-vacuum connection (A) and pre-vacuum connection (B) have flanges
according to DIN 28 404.
All the pumps are driven by a direct flanged three phase, standard TEFV motor via a pin and bush coupling.
Optional extras: if required, pipe connection flange, liquid separator and motor starter.
Suitability
The units VWP are suitable for the use in the industrial field i.e. the protection equipments corresponds to
EN DIN 294 table 4, for people aged 14 and above.
The Roots pumps VWP are primarily used for producing coarse and fine vacuum and for handling gasses and vapours.
They can tolerate water vapour and most corrosive vapours. Contamination that could be drawn in such as dust and liquid
can not build up in the conveyor chamber even after shutdown because the direction of flow is from the top to the bottom
of the units.
Roots boosters are normally used in combination with backing pumps.
The ambient and suction temperatures must be between 5 and 40° C. For temperatures outside this range
please contact your supplier.
Liquid slugs and solids cannot be handled.
For handling of explosive gases or vapours please contact Rietschle.
In order to prevent aggressive media from penetrating into the gear chamber, sealing gas can be superimposed over the
labyrinth sealing system (see sealing gas connection (S)). For further information please contact our company.
The standard versions may not be handled in explosion areas. Special versions with Ex-proof motors can be supplied.
For all applications where an unplanned shut down of the Roots pump could possibly cause harm to
persons or installations, the corresponding safety backup system must be installed.
The VWP can be operated in 4 different connection positions. Standard version is position 01.
