OpERATING INSTRUCTIONS
G
COMpONENT TESTER I-V CURVE
ITEM NO. 1301290
INTENDED USE
The component tester makes the graphical view of the current-voltage characteristics of electrical
components in conjunction with a 2-channel oscilloscope (not included) possible.
Passive components, such as resistors, coils, capacitances and semiconductors such as diodes
and their combinations, are measured.
In order to correctly represent the curve, the oscilloscope requires 2 inputs with an impedance of
1 megohm, and it also must be switched to X-Y mode.
Measurement is only permitted on de-energized components and circuits. Do not apply voltage to
the measurement input.
The power supply to operate the device is included. Use only the supplied or a matching power
supply with identical specifications.
Any use other than that described above may damage the product and may also involve risks, such
as short-circuit, burns, electric shock, etc.
No part of the product may be modified or rebuilt, and the housing must not be opened.
Measurements are not permitted in damp rooms or outdoors, nor under adverse environmental
conditions.
Unfavourable ambient conditions are:
- dampness or high air humidity,
- dust and combustible gases, vapours or solvents,
- thunderstorms or similar weather conditions such as strong electrostatic fields, etc.
- potentially explosive atmosphere (Ex).
A lways observe the safety notes included in these operating instructions.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND HAZARD wARNINGS
C arefully read the entire manual before using the product. It contains important
information about correct operation.
D amage caused by failure to follow these operating instructions will void the war-
ranty! we do not assume any liability for any resulting damage!
w e do not assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by
improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions! Any warranty will be
void in such cases.
• T he unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is not permitted for
safety and approval reasons (CE).
• M easurement devices and accessories should be kept away from children. Therefore,
be especially careful when children are around.
• C onnect the BNC outputs of the component tester to the oscilloscope first and then
connect the measuring input to the components to be tested. Once measurements
have been completed, start by disconnecting the measurement leads from the circuit
before disconnecting the BNC connections from the oscilloscope.
• B e especially cautious when dealing with voltages exceeding >33 V/AC or >70 V/DC!
Such voltages may even cause a life-threatening electric shocks if you come into
contact with live conductors.
• P rior to each measurement, check your instrument and its measuring leads for
damage. Never take any measurements if the protecting insulation is defective (torn,
missing, etc.).
• T o eliminate the risks of electric shock, do not directly or indirectly touch the connec-
tions/ measuring points during measurements.
• D o not use the appliance shortly before, during or shortly after a thunderstorm
(lightning!/ over voltage!). Make sure that your hands, shoes, clothing, the floor, the
measuring device and/or measuring lines, circuits and circuit components are always
dry.
• D o not use the tester in rooms or under adverse ambient conditions; that is, when flam-
mable gases, vapours or explosive dust may be or are present. The device may not be
used in explosion-prone areas (Ex).
• U se only a standard mains socket (230 V/AC, 50/60 Hz) of the public power supply
network as a source of voltage. The mains socket must be near the device and easily
accessible, or an emergency stop device must be present.
• D o not use in the immediate proximity of strong magnetic or electromagnetic fields or
transmission aerials. These can affect the measurement.
• I f you have reason to assume that safe operation is no longer possible, disconnect the
device immediately and secure it against inadvertent operation. Safe operation can no
longer be assumed if:
- the device is visibly damaged,
- the device does not function any more and
- the device was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of time or
VERSION 04/15
- it has been subjected to considerable stress during transportation.
• D o not switch the device on immediately after taking it from a cold into warmer room.
The condensation that forms might destroy your device. Allow the device to reach room
temperature before switching it on.
• N ever disassemble the product! There is risk of a life-threatening electric shock!
• D o not leave packaging material carelessly lying around; it could become a dangerous
plaything for children.
• T he device is only suited to dry indoor locations (not for use in bathrooms or similar
damp interiors). The device must not get wet or damp. There is risk of a life-threatening
electric shock!
• I n commercial institutions, the accident prevention regulations of the Employer's
Liability Insurance Association for Electrical Systems and Operating Facilities are to be
observed.
• I n schools, training centres, computer and self-help workshops, the use of measuring
instruments and accessories must be supervised by trained personnel in a responsible
manner.
• C onsult qualified staff if you have doubts about how the equipment operates or about
how to connect it safely.
• H andle the product with care. The product can be damaged if crushed, struck or
dropped, even from a low height.
• T his device left the factory in a safe and perfect condition.
• W e kindly request that the user observes the safety instructions and warnings
contained in the enclosed operating instructions so this condition is maintained and to
ensure safe operation. Please pay attention to the following symbols:
A n exclamation mark in a triangle indicates important information in these operating
instructions, which is to be followed strictly.
T he "arrow" symbol is used where special tips and notes on operation are provided.
T his product has been CE-tested and meets the necessary national and European
guidelines
R egularly check on the technical safety of the device and the connected measuring
cables, e. g. check for damage to the housing or for crimping, etc.
N ever operate the device when it is open.
!RISK OF FATAL INJURY!
N ever exceed the maximum admissible input values. Never touch circuits or parts
of circuits with voltages greater than 33 V/ACrms or 70 V/DC! Life threatening!
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIpTION
The component tester uses AC voltage for measurement. This AC voltage feeds a series connection
consisting of the test object and integrated resistors. The measuring voltage and the voltage drop
are transmitted to the oscilloscope via the two measuring outputs X and Y.
In terms of passive, actual variables such as in resistors, both voltages are in phase. The beam on
the screen is displayed as a bar.
Capacitors or coils cause a phase difference between current and voltage and also between the
two deflection voltages at the outputs X and Y. The beam on the screen forms elliptical images. The
impedance is responsible for position and opening width of the ellipses.
- A n ellipse with horizontal longitudinal axis indicates a high impedance (low capacitance or high
inductance)
- A n ellipse with vertical longitudinal axis indicates a low impedance (high capacitance or low
inductance)
- A n ellipse in a tilted position indicates a relative high loss resistance in series with the reactance.
The voltage-dependent characteristic kink appears In semiconductors such as diodes when
transitioning from a non-conducting to a conducting state. The forward and reverse characteristic is
represented, insofar as the test voltage of 9 V allows it.
Due to the two-pole measurement, amplification of transistors cannot be tested. However, the indi-
vidual transitions of base, collector and emitter can be tested. Due to the low test current of approx.
2 mArms, non-destructive tests can be performed for almost all semiconductors.
T he standard precautions for dealing with static-sensitive MOS components must
be observed.
