Quill return spring, Fig. 8.1–8.2
It may be necessary to adjust your quill return spring if
the tension is such that the quill returns either too ra-
pidIy or too slowly
1 Lower table for additional clearance.
2 Work from left side of drill press.
3 Place the stop ring (6) to 0 and this clamp with the
thumbscrew (7).
4 Place screwdriver in lower front notch (1) of spring cap
(2), and hold it in place while loosening and removing
jam (outer) nut (D) only.
5 Hold the screwdriver firmly in the groove and loosen
the large (inner) nuts (3 +4) until the groove is de-
tached from the nose (R). Do not remove the nut.
6 Carefully turn screwdriver anticlockwise and engage
next notch in boss. Do not remove screwdriver.
7 Tighten the 2 nuts again using a wrench, so that the
groove is held in the nose. If you tighten the nut too
much, the mandrel may get jammed.
8 Move stop nuts and depth pointer to upper most posi-
tion and check tension while turning feed handles. If
there is not enough tension on spring, repeat steps
3-8 moving onIy one notch each time and checking
tension after repetition. Proper tension is achieved
when quill returns gent I y to full up position when
released from 20 mm-3/4" -depth.
9 When there is enough tension after checking, „ replace
jam nut and tighten to standard nut, but do not over
tighten again standard nut.
10 Check quill while feeding to have smooth and unre-
stricted movement. If movement is too tight, loosen
jam nut and slightly loosen standard nut until unre-
stricted. Retighten jam nut.
The angular play of the spindle.
With the spindle in a low position, take it in your hand
and try to make it revolving about its axis. If there is too
much play, proceed as follows:
1 Loosen lock nut (A).
2 Turn the screw (B) clockwise to eliminate the play but
without obstructing the upward and downward motion
of the spindle (a little bit of play is normal).
3 Tighten the lock nut.
