• Camshaft Setting
3888-9 (Exhaust) and 3888-10 (Inlet)
• Fit Setting Plate 3888-9 over exhaust
camshaft and Plate 3888-10 over inlet
camshaft, ensuring they fit into the grooves
in the camshafts, and then bolt firmly in
position.
NOTE:
The lever arm of Setting Plate
3888-9 is also used for tensioner
roller positioning.
• Release the tension and remove the old
timing belt together with the exhaust
camshaft sprocket only.
• Vehicle maker advises that tensioner and
guide roller need to be replaced with new
when replacing the timing belt. (Observe
vehicle manufacturer's instructions)
• Fitting
new
procedure
• Fit the new timing belt together with the
exhaust camshaft sprocket. All camshaft
sprocket bolts should be finger-tight only
and positioned in the centre of the
elongated holes.
NOTE:
The lever arm on the Exhaust Cam
Setting Plate 3888-9 should rest on
the pointer of the tensioner and
must move freely up and down.

• Initial Tensioner Positioning
• Turn tensioner roller anti-clockwise so
pointer pushes the lever arm of 3888-9
upwards until the upper part of the arm
(not the small raised portion) is level with
the upper edge of the Setting Plate.
The tensioner pointer should now be in a
position (A). Tighten tensioner bolt and the
six camshaft sprocket bolts.
• Remove 3888-8 Pin and 3888-9 and Setting
Plates 3888-10. Turn the crankshaft clock-
wise two revolutions by hand and return
engine to TDC position.

• Final Tensioner Position
• Insert the Crank Locking Pin fit the two
Camshaft Setting Plates, bolting them firmly
in place.
Maintenance work on engines must be carried out only by
experienced mechanics. Always wear personal protective equipment.

• Slacken the six camshaft sprocket bolts and
tensioner bolt.
• Turn tensioner clockwise so it adjusts the
small raised portion of the lever arm to be
level with the upper edge of the Setting
Plate.
• Check that the tensioner pointer is now
aligned within the groove to be in
position (B).
• Tighten tensioner bolt and the six camshaft
sprocket bolts and remove all tools.

Crankshaft Locking Pins

• Locking Pins 3888-1, 3888-13 and
3888-15
• These Crankshaft Locking Pins lock the
engine in timing position. They enter datum
holes in the engine block and locate onto
the crankshaft.
• Pins 3888-1 or 3888-15 (see Pin Guide
below) locate into a slot in the crankshaft
web. Always move crankshaft slightly
forwards and backwards to be certain the
pin is inserted in the slot correctly.
• Pin 3888-13 (see Pin Guide below) screws
into the datum hole and the end of the Pin
presses against a 'flat' on the crankshaft
web.
