15. The heating cable shall also not come into contact with itself in the downpipe. Appropriate spacers are to be fitted every 15 cm
before the heating cable is lowered into the downpipe.
16. The heating cable in the downpipe must reach at least 1 metre below ground level in order to ensure that the downpipe remains
free of frost past the ground frost line.
17. Check once again that the heating cable lies in the intended position, the heating line is positioned completely in the gutter/downpipe
and that the heating line does not come into contact with itself, does not cross over itself and does not overlap itself.
We recommend a cable laying kit.
4.2 Installation - pipe trace heating
Preparing the piping and heating cable:
1. Ensure that the area around the pipework is feely accessible and that there are no sharp edges or easily flammable materials present
(in order to reduce the risk of damaging the cable and adjoining areas as much as possible).
2. Remove sharp edges or fit protection.
3. Earth all metallic parts of the installation.
• For safety reasons, earth pipework, metal guttering, metal conduits and sheathing before laying. Ensure that all metal parts are earthed
before starting with the installation. The conductivity of the complete system must be checked and any additional earthing connections
required must be established.
• Allow the heating cable to warm up to room temperature before starting with the installation.
4. Check the continuity, the resistance and the insulation resistance of the frost protection heating cable before starting with the installation and
also after the installation, and always before connecting the mains plug. The resistance value must match with the value on the product label
before and after installation. A tolerance of -5% to +10% is permitted. The insulation resistance must be greater than 10 MOhm. (See: Table 1)
5. Before installation, roll the heating cable out on the floor and arrange it on the floor in the same way as it is to be subsequently installed
against the pipe.
Power supply preparations:
6. Install the mains power outlet in the protected area (indoors).
7. Form a ‚drip loop' with the mains cable after the mains power outlet in order to prevent condensate reaching the socket.
Fitting the heating cable and thermostat:
8. The thermostat must lie tight against the pipe and secured with PVC insulating tape. Do not use belts. The thermostat must be fitted at the
coldest end of the pipe. The thermostat measures the temperature of the pipe and switches the heating cable on or off as required.
9. Lay the heating cable against the pipe and fasten the heating cable to the pipe at max. distances of 600 mm with PVC insulating tape.
10. In order to guarantee frost protection during extremely cold weather periods, or to reduce energy consumption, the pipe and the heating
cable should be insulated. The pipe / heating cable can be insulated with fireproof mineral wool or foam insulation. The thermostat too should
be insulated with the same insulation as the pipe / heating cable in order to ensure that the same temperature is maintained in all sections of
the pipe.
11. In the case of mineral wool or foam insulation, a max. insulation depth of 13 mm can be fitted over the heating cable. Note that the mineral
wool insulation can be damaged by moisture and so must be protected with a waterproof sheathing in order to avoid moisture ingress. Foam
insulation is not generally impaired by moisture.
5. Operation
1. The heating cable has an automatic thermostat, which switches on the heating cable as soon as a temperature of ca. +3°C is detected,
and switches it off again when a temperature of ca. +13°C is detected.
2. The heating cable shall not be connected in the summer (unplug).
6. Maintenance and servicing
1. It is recommended to check the gutter heating cable before the onset of winter and to inspect the heating cable for signs of damage and check
that the power supply is operating properly. If the heating cable is undamaged and the power supply is functioning properly, the connection
plug of the heating cable can be plugged into the outlet.
2. Keep all gutters and downpipes free of flammable materials such as foliage, refuse, litter etc.
