5. When I look through the telescope I can only see the ground
In this case you will have pointed the objective, or the front of the telescope, at the ground. This is a
common mistake with Newtonian telescopes. The front opening of the telescope must always point
upwards (as illustrated on the cover). Also, the focuser on the side of Newtonian telescopes must always
be towards the top rather than the bottom, and you must have inserted a suitable eyepiece into it to be
able to see an image.
6. Objects are upside down
All astronomical telescopes produce an inverted image, as it is not important how objects are oriented
for astronomical observing. Only an Amici prism or an erecting lens can erect the image. Erecting the
image is dispensed with for astronomical observing as it can lead to a certain loss of image quality.
7. The stars only appear as points in the telescope
Stars will always appear only as points, even in the largest telescopes in the world. It is more interesting for
beginners to observe two-dimensional objects, such the moon or planets. Once you find these, you will be
able to start learning about the astronomical calendar.
8. I would like to observe the sun
An appropriate solar filter, placed over the objective, is essential for observing the sun. These are available
as plastic foil or glass filters. They allow only a tiny and harmless fraction of sunlight into the telescope
when securely positioned over the objective, so allowing you to observe the sun in complete safety.
Eyepiece solar filters (not available from us) should be avoided at all costs as they are considered unsafe.
Note: Never look directly at the sun through a telescope without an objective solar filter!
9. I am not sure whether the right finder scope was delivered
Telescopes are often shown together with an optical finder scope. But it is also possible that your telescope
comes supplied with an LED red dot finder instead. Both are appropriate, and manufacturers often change
between the two. An LED red dot finder is also an advantage for beginners as there is no inverted or
mirrored image involved.
