Prepare for Installation
Homeowner checklist prior to installation
Before you cut any pipe, be sure the homeowner has completed these steps in the Homeowner Quick Start Guide:
1. Put the battery in the Controller and plug it into a standard wall outlet for 2-3 minutes. (See the Quick Start Guide for further
instructions on battery charging options.)
2. Download the Buoy Whole Home Water Controller app from Google Play or the App Store.
3. Unplug the Controller from the charger.
4. Test the shutoff valve by pushing the red button and holding it for two seconds, then releasing. You will hear the shutoff valve
close. Press the red button again to open the valve, and leave it open for the installation.
5. Follow the in-app instructions to connect the Controller to your home's WiFi network.
6. Bring the Controller to the location in which the plumber will install the Buoy Controller to ensure that your WiFi network reaches the
Controller. If there's a problem with the WiFi, the LED on the Controller will start blinking red.
7. When your Controller is connected to your home WiFi network, your plumber can begin installation.
Caution
The Buoy Controller must never be installed:
• On a home without an existing main water shutoff
• On fire sprinkler water lines or fire suppression systems
• In a place that might be submerged in water
• In a place that might be buried in snow
• Behind a wall or other inaccessible place
• On pipe more than 2-in. diameter
In any configuration, be sure the blue end of the Controller faces the water INLET
and the grey end of the Controller faces the water OUTLET.
Installation Checklist
While the homeowner is working on the above steps, you can prepare for installation.
If there are any issues during the installation process, please contact 1-800-633-3991 to speak with customer support.
Go to the suggested install location for the Buoy Controller and make sure the location is viable. The device can be installed
horizontally or vertically.
Identify diameter (adaptors are required for anything other than 3/4 in.) and type (CPVC, copper, galvanized) of pipe, and verify that
you have all necessary fittings.
Locate the home's manual shutoff valve. The Buoy Controller must be installed after:
• the utility water meter
• the water main manual shutoff
• the PRV, if one is present.
NOTE: If the PRV is more than three (3) years old, consider replacing the PRV to ensure that the Buoy Controller is protected.
Remind the customer that you will be turning off the water during installation.
Take a "before" picture of the existing plumbing.
