Emergency Breakaway (Repairable)
Caution
These devices separate at 350 pounds of pull. Prior to installation, determine that such a pull force will not
damage the hose assembly or dispenser. The dispenser must be securely bolted to the dispensing island.
Installation
Side Hose Connection: (Figure A)
Install coupling immediately downstream after hose retractor
clamp: then install appropriate length of hose between coupling
and nozzle. Flexible connector (Part No. 699-200) is not
needed in this application.
Overhead Hose Connection: (Figure B)
Install coupling with flexible connector (EBW 699-200) into the
dispenser outlet as shown, then install appropriate length of
hose between coupling and nozzle.
Nozzle or Nozzle Swivel Connection: (Figure C)
To install a 697 near nozzle or nozzle swivel a 699-200 flexible
connector must be used between 697 and the nozzle swivel.
Note: Attach a scale to where the Safety-Sever will be
installed. Apply 350 lbs. of pull force at various angles
and check dispenser and hose. Remove scale and
complete installation.
Use U.L. classified pipe sealant on threaded connections.
Do Not use PTFE Tape.
When tightening coupling onto the hose fittings, use wrench
only on coupling half, adjacent to the hose fitting. (Using
wrench on other half can shear the locating pin or lugs).
(DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN)
Do not install 697 Safety-Severs directly to a nozzle swivel.

If Separation Occurs
1. Shut off dispenser and relieve line pressure.
2. Examine both halves for damage. If any part appears
damaged, replace entire safety-sever. (Note: Be sure
severed portion of the shear pin has been removed)
3. Lubricate O-ring with light oil.
4. Reassemble unit by pushing male end into female half
while aligning set screw holes in protective sleeves
until unit snaps together.
Install New aluminum tipped shear screw.
5. If Safety-Sever does not readily reassemble by hand, it
has been damaged beyond repair and must be replaced.
Use only genuine EBW shear screws (697-133)
for replacement in 697-137 Breakaway.
CAUTION
DO NOT remove the shear screw unless there is
a drive-off.
