USER INSTRUCTIONS
Please read these instructions in conjunction with the 3M 800 Series Reference leaflet
where you will find information on: -

FOREWORD
Failure to follow all instructions on the use of this product and/or failure to wear the respirator
system during all times of exposure may adversely affect the wearer's health, may lead to severe
illness or permanent disability and may render any warranty null and void.
If you have any doubts about the suitability of the product to your job situation, it is recommended that
you consult an occupational hygienist, or call 3M OH&ES Technical Affairs at your local 3M office.
See back of this booklet for addresses and telephone numbers.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The 800 Series headtops combine head, eye and respiratory protection and are designed to be used
with an approved air filter unit (AFU) or regulator (see Reference leaflet) to form a respiratory
protection device.
The air will be fed via a breathing tube from a belt mounted AFU or regulator to the back of the
headtop. The air flows over the top of the wearer's head and down in front of the face. The visor and
face seal prevent the ingress of contaminated air.
APPROVALS
These products, when used as part of a 3M Approved System have been shown to meet the Basic
Safety Requirements under Article 10 and 11B of the European Directive 89/686/EEC and are thus
CE marked.
The products were examined at the design stage by: British Standards Institution,
389 Chiswick High Road, London, England W4 4AL, (Notified Body number 0086).
LIMITATIONS OF USE
Use this respirator system strictly in accordance with all instructions:
• contained in this booklet,
• accompanying other components of the system (e.g. 3M 800 Series Reference leaflet, Air filter Unit
or Regulator User Instructions).
Do not use in concentrations of contaminant above 20 times the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL).
Do not use for respiratory protection against unknown atmospheric contaminants or when
concentrations of contaminants are unknown or immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH), or in
atmospheres containing less than 19,5% oxygen (3M definition. Individual countries may apply their
own limits on oxygen deficiency. Please seek advice if in doubt).
Only use with the Air filter unit's / Regulators and spares / accessories listed in the Reference leaflet
and within the usage conditions given in the Technical Specification.
Only for use by trained competent personnel.

Leave the contaminated area immediately if:
IRL
a) Any part of the system becomes damaged.
b) Airflow into the headtop decreases or stops.
c) Breathing becomes difficult.
d) Dizziness or other distress occurs.
e) You taste or smell contaminants or an irritation occurs.
Never modify or alter this product, replace parts only with original 3M parts.
Do not use oxygen or oxygen enriched air.
Do not use in flammable or explosive atmospheres (Call 3M OH & ES technical affairs at your
local office).
If using in Supplied Air mode ensure that:
• The source of the air supply is known;
• The purity of the air supply is known;
• The air supply is of a breathable quality, to EN12021 (UK customers use BS4275).
Only suitable for use by clean-shaven personnel, facial hair under the seal reduces protection.
Use only with recommended spectacles. Contact your supplier.
High winds above 2m/s, or very high work rates (where the pressure within the headtop can become
negative) can reduce protection. Adjust equipment as appropriate or consider an alternative form of
respiratory protective device.
Materials, which may come into contact with the wearer's skin, are not known to cause allergic
reactions to the majority of individuals.
These products contain no components made from natural rubber latex.
EQUIPMENT MARKING
For air filter unit / regulator marking please see appropriate User Instruction.
The HT-820, HT-840 and HT-880 headtops are marked to EN1835 LDH2, prEN146 (rev) TH2 and
EN12941 TH2.
The HT-820 headtop is marked to EN812.
The HT-840 and HT-880 headtops are marked to EN397.
The 800 Series visors are marked to EN166. Polycarbonate EN166:1:B:3:9.
The 800 Series visor surrounds are marked to EN166:3:9:-B.
Label inside the headtop with a date of manufacture.
Label inside the headtop: WARNING! Possible electrostatic hazard. The helmet and visor must only be
cleaned in a safe area.
PREPARATION FOR USE
Check:
• Apparatus is complete, undamaged and correctly assembled, any damaged or defective parts must be
replaced before use.
Undertake pre-use checks on air filter unit or regulator assembly as outlined in the appropriate user
instruction.
Headtop adjustment
The headtop should be adjusted to give the best face seal and field of vision.
The headtop can be adjusted as shown in Fig. 1.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
DONNING
1. Select an approved breathing tube (Please see 800 Series Reference leaflet for list of 3M approved
breathing tubes) and connect top end to the headtop assembly.
2. Connect the bottom end of the breathing tube to the outlet of the regulator / air filter unit.
3. Adjust and fit the air filter unit / regulator as outlined in the appropriate User Instruction.
