-5- Electrical connections
The electrical connections for control and/or power must be made by accredited professionals,
with current certifications appropriate to each country. Any electrical connection error may cause damage
to equipment, serious injury or even death.
Electrical control and power connections on the compressor must be made in accordance with the
instructions below:
Electrical equipment must be installed in accordance with the requirements of the European Low Voltage
Directive, 2006/95/EC and other national and international regulations. For any other questions, contact
Tecumseh.
For compressors equipped with separate windings (Part Winding Start, Star Delta Star), it is recommended
that a suitable regulator is used. This manages the refrigerating capacity and progressive start-up.
During the operation of the compressor, the suction temperatures may cause condensation or
frosting, and cause short circuits in the terminal box. It is essential that IP65 rated glands or better are
fitted, in order to prevent any air or humidity from entering the terminal box.
5.1 – Sizing of the protection
Contactors must be Category AC3.
If the starting type is "Part Winding Start" (PWS), each contactor must be sized to accept a minimum
current of at least 70% of the maximum operating intensity (MRA).
If the start-up type is "Star / Delta", each contactor in the delta line must be sized to accept a minimum
current of at least 60% of the MRA. Each contactor on the star line must be sized to accept a minimum
current of at least 50% of the MRA.
Fuses must be AM type, sized according to the MRA linked to the application. It is strongly recommended
that you use thermo-magnetic circuit breakers instead of fuses.
Do not forget to check that the voltage and frequency indicated on the compressor name plate are
those for your application. Replace the actuators when the mean operating time or the date recommended
by the manufacturer has been reached.
5.2 – Supply cables
The phase order for each winding (for PWS motors) must be identical.
The operation of a motor with opposed phase windings, even for a few seconds, can damage the
compressor beyond repair.
PWS (Part Winding Start): it is not only necessary for the windings to be wound in the same direction, but
also that the respective terminals are connected to the same conductor. It is therefore recommended that
phase L1 is connected to terminals 1 and 7, phase L2 to terminals 2 and 8, and phase L3 to terminals 3 and
9. The first winding must be supplied between 0.5 and 1 second before switching over to the second one.
The compressor is not designed to be directly connected to the electricity main. It is essential that
the installation is protected with the necessary electrical safety devices.
