-7 - Use and maintenance

The most common maintenance operations are:
Checking operating temperatures and pressures, compared to those stated on the data sheet on
first start-up,
Verification of the oil and temperature levels.
Verification of the correct operation of control and safety devices (pressure switches, safety
switches, solenoid valves...)
Verification of the electrical circuit and its connections: tightening nuts and visually examining the
condition of insulation on electrical cables, etc.
Verification of the refrigerant charge by reading pressures and temperatures in the circuit.
Searching for possible leaks.
Replacing the oil.
It is not usually necessary to change the oil for water coolers and complete refrigerating systems charged
in the factory. In cases where applications are assembled on site and for operating systems close to the
limits of the compressor operating window, it is recommended that the oil is replaced after 100 hours.
Subsequently, the oil may be replaced after approximately 10,000 or 12,000 hours of operation.
If there is any doubt about the compressor's operation, contact
Tecumseh after-sales service, after carefully assembling all the technical data.

-8 - De-commissioning

For switching off, you must have the appropriate authorisations for working on electrical and
cooling circuits. Ensure that you have the necessary skills or qualified personnel.
Close the valves. Leave the crankcase heating element switched on. Cut the supply to the compressor by
removing the fuses or opening the circuit breaker. Recover the refrigerant fluid, using appropriate
equipment.
Once the compressor is under slight negative pressure, charge with nitrogen at a pressure slightly higher
than atmospheric pressure.
Connect the oil drain valve to a container suitable for lubricants and displaying hazardous material
markings. The container must be 30 to 50% larger by volume than the oil contained in the compressor.
Once the oil has been completely transferred, switch off the crankcase heating element and close the drain
valve.
The refrigerant fluid and oil thus recovered must be recycled in a waste treatment plant, according
to current legislation in the country of installation.
The recovered refrigerants and oil are considered to be industrial waste and must be treated, in
accordance with legislation.
Cut the electrical supply to the compressor terminals.
The terminal plate must never be removed, in order to prevent any leak of refrigerant.
Isolate and remove the compressor from the refrigerating circuit, leaving the valves and flanges on the
refrigerating circuit.
Lift up the compressor as described in section 1 and send it either to your distributor, or to Tecumseh or to
a compressor recycling centre.
