4 GETTING STARTED (continued)
4.5 SELECTING THE MEASUREMENT UNITS
Readings can be displayed in µm or mils. To select the measurement
units, press Menu/Setup/Units.
4.6 SELECTING THE APPROPRIATE CALIBRATION MEMORY
The Elcometer 456 IPC gauge is factory calibrated to ensure accurate
measurement on blast profiled, ferrous (steel) substrates.
The gauge has been pre-calibrated with four profile measurement
ranges (see table below) which are determined by the measurement
units selected by the user.
Once the profile of the coated substrate has been determined, press
'Cal' and select the relevant calibration profile range.

>100µm, Coarse
When the measurement units are set to microns (Menu/Setup/
Units/µm), the gauge operates in accordance with ISO 19840. When
set to mils (Menu/Setup/Units/mils), the gauge operates in accordance
with US Navy NSI 009-32.
Note: The gauge resolution is fixed at 10µm / 1 mil (where 5µm / 0.5 mil is rounded up).
4.7 TESTING THE CALIBRATION
As the gauge is factory calibrated, the calibration cannot be adjusted
by the user and the gauge should be returned to Elcometer for
re-calibration. The user can, however, verify the accuracy of the
gauge calibration in the field using the 'Test Calibration' option.
To test the calibration, press Cal/Test Calibration and follow the
on-screen instructions.
