5. FITTING OF THE (-) EARTH CABLE OF THE HTL
Besides a correct (+) power circuit, a sound (-) earth cir-
cuit is equally important for the good and reliable opera-
tion of the HTL on the long term.
On a growing number of vans, trucks and trac-
tor units, it is discouraged or even completely
forbidden to mount a quick and short (-) earth
connection between the HTL and the chassis
of the vehicle.
Consult the technical documentation of the
vehicle manufacturer to assure which kind of
earth connection is required or allowed;
1. A short connection from the (-) pole of the
electromotor of the HTL to the vehicle chas-
sis; or
2. An insulated (-) earth return cable from the
(-) pole of the electromotor of the HTL to
the (-) pole of the vehicle batteries
Apart from the cost factor involved, the insu-
lated (-) earth return cable has nothing but ad-
vantages over an earth connection over the
vehicle chassis.
An (-) earth over the vehicle chassis could potentially
interfere with / cause damage to the vehicle electron-
ics.
The paint finish of the HTL (KTL e-coat + powder
coat), and the bolted mounting of the lift frame to the
vehicle chassis have an strong insulating effect. They
disrupt any "natural" earth effect that you might expect
between the electromotor of the HTL and the vehicle
chassis.
Chassis mounted (-) earth cables tend to suffer more
from oxidation, vehicle vibrations,... and from bad
execution (insufficient removal of chassis paint, bad
tightening...).
