(maximum 30 minutes on rough road or 50 km on normal road) and retightened, if necessary. In par-
ticular during longer drives, the bolted joints between the roof rack and vehicle roof shall be checked
for firm attachment at regular intervals - but no later than 500 km - and retightened, if necessary. On
rough roads, an inspection of the bolted connection shall be repeated after 2 hours travel respectively.
Loading
19.
Do not transport objects whose shape, content or nature, may be dangerous for other road users.
20.
The maximum load capacity as shown in the assembly instructions must not be exceeded. In
any case, the instructions of the manufacturer of the vehicle regarding maximum load capacity
must always be taken into account and if it differs from the shown in the fitting instructions then
the lower is to be the right.
21.
Maximum load on the roof = weight of the roof rack + weight of other roof accesories + load
itself weight.
22.
The load must be uniformly distributed over the total loading area of the product, with the
center of gravity as low as possible. The load shall not protrude significantly over the loading
area and Road Traffic Regulations shall be followed. Heavy, narrow loads must be put as near
to the fixation as possible. When carrying surf boards or similar (pipes, ladders, mattresses,
which may produce lifting forces), these objects must not be put one aside the other, but one
over the other. They must be independently fixed to the front and the back side of the vehicle
with belts or tightening elements suitable to resist lifting forces.
23.
Use only specific accessories for carrying bikes, skis, etc.
24.
All loose or removable parts of the load such as panniers, tyre pumps, fins, etc, shall be removed.
25.
Make sure bikes or parts of the bikes (e.g. handlebars or pedals) shall not protrude over the
contour of the vehicle. Remove child seats, panniers, cover plates etc. Consult bike carrier as-
sembly instructions about the permissible number and bicycle weight for each model.
26.
Skis must be loaded with tips to the rear of the vehicle. Consult ski carrier assembly instructions about
the permissible number of pairs of skis for each model. The distance between supporting pieces (ski
carrier) must be adjusted so that, when the binding strikes the rear support, the skis cannot tip out at
the front support.
27.
Surf, windsurf boards and roof boxes shall be mounted without adjustment angle in the direc-
tion of travel – to avoid increased buoyancy forces.
28.
Loads must be secured against shifting out of place with appropriate fixation straps or similar
(no elastic straps with fixing hooks).
Driving
29.
When transporting items on the roof the speed shall be adapted to the objective conditions such
as road state, road surfacing, side wind conditions, general traffic levels etc, but must under no
circunstances exceed 130 km/h. Speed limits and other road traffic or country-specific regulations
shall always be followed.
30.
The driver must foresee the differences in the behaviour of the vehicle when braking, cornering
and because of side winds.
31.
Sudden braking, abrupt starting off and rapid cornering shall be avoided where possible.
32.
Products with locks must always be locked when moving.
33.
Roof bars, roof racks and roof accessories must be removed before entering car wash facilities.
34.
After driving brakes, in which the vehicle with roof rack has been left unattended, all freely
accessible attachments of the roof rack and the load should be checked for strenght and func-
tionality (inspection for damaging external influence).
35.
For reasons of fuel economy, environmental impact and the safety of other road users, roof
racks (or other roof accesories) should be removed from the vehicle when not in use.
36.
When driving with roof racks with and without load into garages, multistorey car parks etc., it is
imperative to observe the significantly increased vehicle height. Failure to comply may result
in a collision and can lead to major material damage and personal injury.
Maintenance
37.
Keep the product always in good condition. Mobile pieces must be lubricated. Replace worn
and defective pieces. Clean and maintain always the product. The user is the only responsible
for keeping the condition and security of the product.
