.
Application instructions
Application and removal of the SofTec Coxa:
• Place SofTec Coxa around your pelvis. Position the orthosis
snuggly on your iliac crests. Take care that the side bar runs
laterally, centered on the thigh (Fig. 1).
• For basic positioning, insert your fingers into the finger pockets
on both parts of the closure belt and secure by evenly pulling.
The right half of the closure belt is place on top of the left half
of the closure belt and adhered with Velcro (Fig. 2). First remove
fingers from the left and then from the right finger pocket.
• Tension straps ensure the medical-therapeutic effect and the
correct positioning of the SofTec Coxa.
• To fix the SofTec Coxa, take the tension straps, which are passed
around the back, in both hands and pull them evenly towards
the front (Fig. 3). Take care here that the straps run along the
lower part of the pelvic shells and attach both ends of the straps
with Velcro tape to the lower part of the front fastener (Fig. 4).
The ends of the straps can also be attached to one another with
Velcro tape, as required.
• For easier handling of the SofTec Coxa, always refasten the
opened straps loosely right away with the Velcro tape. This
should be practiced with the patient.
• There must be basic tension of the straps on the pelvic shells so
that the SofTec Coxa cannot slip. Straps that are too loose lead to
a loss of medical efficacy.
Leg harness:
• Position the outside leg harness centered on the thigh and place
the leg support around the thigh from the back. Insert your
fingers into the finger pockets on both halves of the fastener
provided for this purpose (Fig. 5).
• Secure the closure belt by snugly attaching the Velcro tape from
the side of the closure belt coming from the inside with the
fastener coming from the outside (Fig. 6).
• Now fasten the two front straps on the leg harness (Figs. 7 and 8).
• The rear supporting straps do not need to be opened when
attaching and removing the SofTec Coxa. The rear straps have
already been adapted to your thigh circumference by the
orthotist. If you have to adjust their position, take care that the
leg harness runs laterally to the thigh. To correctly readjust the
rear straps, loosen the rear and front straps at the same time.
Position the leg harness centered on the thigh and pull evenly on
the lower front and lower back straps. Repeat this procedure for
the upper straps.
• If using the orthosis for both hips, attach the second leg harness
to the first one.
Removing the SofTec Coxa:
• Open the front straps of the leg support first and attach these
loosely to the straps with the Velcro tape and then open the
closure belt on the leg support. Then open the straps on the
pelvic harness and attach them loosely to the straps with Velcro
tape. Now the closure belt on the pelvic harness can be opened.
Keep the SofTec Coxa tight on the side on which the joint / leg
shell is located.
• For easier handling of the SofTec Coxa, always refasten the
opened straps loosely with the Velcro tape. Application and
removal of the SofTec Coxa should be practiced with the
patient.
Procedure for the initial fitting with SofTec Coxa:
1. Assembling the pelvic harness
• The SofTec Coxa consists of two plastic pelvic harnesses on
which prefabricated joint supports are mounted for the right
or left side of the pelvis, as required. A right and a left joint
support are included with the product. Depending on whether
the right or left hip requires care, one or the other of the two
joint supports will be set aside. Should both hips require care,
then use both joint supports.
• Insert the joint support (Figs. 9 and 10) for the required side
from the inside behind the pelvic harness (Figs. 9 and 10).
• Secure this joint support with 4 plastic clips (Fig. 11).
• The rivet connector fixes securely with an audible clicking
sound.
Mounting the hinge on the pelvic harness
• To adjust pelvic width, the supplied flat connecting tab,
with the 2 Velcro strips facing inwards (1 Velcro strip faces
outwards), is latched into the head element of the pelvic
harness (Fig. 12). This connection tab allows five-step
adjustment for pelvic width.
• This connection tab is positioned in the correct fixed setting if
the pelvic harness is positioned on the iliac crests and the side
bar runs centered along the longitudinal axis of the thigh.
• Now screw on the hinge with the two M5×10 screws (Figs. 13
and 14).
• Only tighten the hinge so that the side bar can be pushed into
the support for its entire height.
Positioning the pelvic harness on the iliac crest
• To correctly adjust the hinge rotation point to the anatomical
rotation of the hip joint, slide the side bar for its entire height.
The left and right pelvic harnesses must be positioned
symmetrically on the body (Fig. 15). Loosen the "click
connector" on the connection tab for this purpose. Join the
pelvic harness with the connection tab at the final position of
adjustment.
• Fix the setting using the plastic rivet to both pelvic harnesses
(Fig. 16).
2. Combining the fixed elements with the knitted fabric
• The pelvic harness with the hinge first has to be inserted into
the pocket on the knitted fabric component. Then position the
opposite side analogously (Fig. 17).
• For the 1st fitting it is advisable to fix the plastic support using
the inside Velcro tape.
3. Adapting the knitted fabric material
• Position the pelvic harness snugly and prefix the fastener
(Fig. 18).
• To individually adapt the knitted fabric support material open
the circumference widening panel on the back. Adapt this
to the individual circumference size by cutting it to shape
(Fig. 19).
• Take care that the knitted fabric support material is applied
tightly on the complete pelvic harness in the case of a pre-
fixed fastener.
• Remove the orthosis from the patient and shorten the inside
padding centered on the connection tab (Fig. 20).
4. Assembling the thigh shell with the leg support
• Before you fix the leg shell to the lower side bar, slide the joint
protector onto the lower side bar with the open side facing the
front.
• Open the zipper on the shell case.
• Mount the leg shell incl. shell case on the lower end of the side
bar using two M5×6 screws so that the length of the bar can
be adjusted.
• Apply the pre-assembled orthosis to the patient as described
above. Ensure the correct pelvic positioning and the correct
orientation of the side bar in relation to the axis of the hip
joint. Now adjust the outside leg shell to its correct height. The
6
lower end of the leg shell is located on the outside (laterally)
at around the height of the supracondylar support (Fig. 21).
5. Adapting the leg support
• To adapt the leg support you have to measure the
circumference at the middle of the thigh.
• For pre-adaptation, shorten the velour according to the
individual circumference. When closing the fastener, take care
that the adjusting strip is not creased (Fig. 22).
Secure the leg shell incl. shell case with the leg support
• Apply the Velcro strip on the shell case onto the outside of the
Velcro loop strip on the leg support (Fig. 23).
• The position of the shell case depends on the side under
treatment.
• Remove the leg support closure belt from the velour and
adapt the knitted fabric support material to the individual
circumference by cutting it to shape. Reapply the leg support
closure belt.
• Pass the straps through the plastic rings and loosely attach
them to the straps with the Velcro tape (Fig. 24).
• Further adaptation of the leg support on the patient is
described in Section 7 "Adapting the orthosis".
6. Adjusting the hinge
• Before adjusting the hinge, please open the leg shell.
• The hinge can be used on the right and the left. There is a
scale on the side bar above the symbols R and L to set the
flexion angle. The 70°-90° limit setting for the flexion range is
shown left and right of the center axis (blue line) for the side
under treatment. 60° flexion is on the center axis.
• On the hinge disc under the cap there is a scale to set the
extension angle (Fig. 25).
• Remove the cap, limiting pins and extension scale (Fig. 26).
• Each time the hinge disc is rotated by 90°, the
abduction / adduction angle shifts by 6° from the zero position.
Set the abduction / adduction angle as required for the patient.
Fix this setting with a limiting pin on the center line
(60° flexion).
• For final limitation of movement, place the extension scale
back on the hinge disc. Fix the movement limitation using
the 2 limitation pins for flexion (side bar scale) and extension
(hinge disc scale) according to the angle required and the set
abduction and adduction. Place the limitation pin to set the
extension angle and then position the limiting pin to set the
flexion angle by displacing the limiting pin from the center line
(60° flexion), as required.
• Then secure the hinge with the cap. Fix the joint protector on
the leg shell with the adhesion point on the hinge. Now pull the
joint protector over the hinge (Fig. 27).
7. Adapting the orthosis
• Place the orthosis around the body so that the point of rotation
of the hinge coincides with the greater trochanter.
• Place the pelvic harness on the iliac crest (Fig. 28).
• Ensure correct positioning when securing the orthosis.
• Slide the fingers into the finger pockets on both halves of the
closure belt provided for this purpose and pull evenly to the
front.
• Press the left half of the closure belt onto the abdomen and
the right half as far over it so it is possible to attach the Velcro
tape (Fig. 29).
• When attaching the Velcro tape, first remove the fingers from
the left and then from the right finger pocket. Take the two
straps in both hands and pull evenly to the front until the
required force is applied.
• Mark this length on the strap.
• Cut the two straps to this length (Fig. 30), and attach to the
new end with the Velcro strip. Now attach the two straps to
the large fastener with Velcro tape (Fig. 31).
• Correct the height of the leg shell by sliding the side bar into
the right position. Now tighten the screws (Fig. 32). The lower
end of the leg shell is located at around the height of the
supracondylar support on the lateral side.
• Place the leg support around the thigh.
• Slide the fingers into the finger pockets provided for this
purpose and pull evenly to the front.
• Overlap the halves of the closure belt until they can be
attached with the Velcro tape (Fig. 33).
• Pull the straps to the back and front until the required force is
applied.
• Mark this length on the straps.
• Cut the straps to this length (Fig. 34), remove the ends of the
Velcro tape from the cut-off strap and attach to the new end.
• Now attach the straps to the large closure belt with Velcro
tape (Fig. 35).
If using the orthosis for both hips, follow the instructions in
steps 1 and 4 to 7.
When applying the orthosis for the first time, the optimal and
individual fit must be checked and corrected as necessary by
trained specialist personnel. The correct application should be
practiced with the patient.
