Mandatory Pre-Use Precautions To Take
Before using a respirator, you must
— fully understand the environment in which you intend to use it. For example, you
must take measurements with appropriate measuring devices to determine the
air-borne particles, gases, or vapors that the user will encounter. You must then
choose a respirator that is appropriate for that environment.
— take measurements to ensure that the ambient atmosphere contains sufficient
oxygen (see "Limitations on Use" on page 15).
— be thoroughly trained.
— make sure to use only those respirators that have been stored in their original
boxes, and verify that the expiration date printed on the box has not lapsed.
— check the respirator for scratches, tears or other signs of damage, and discard
the respirator if any damage is found (see "Maintenance and Repair" on
page 22).
— strictly follow all applicable government regulations concerning the use of
respirators (in Germany e.g. BGR 190, in Australia and New Zealand
e.g. AS/NZS 1715:1994 "Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory
protective devices", in the USA those promulgated by the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration at 29 CFR, Part 1910.134).
