4.4 Troubleshooting
Possible problems
Causes
No ignition discharge
Faulty ignition piezo
Ignition electrode bro-
ken or incorrectly posi-
tioned
False contact between
terminal and cable
No pilot ignition
No gas
Air in the pipes
Pilot nozzle obstructed
Insufficient gas flow
Poor pilot flame
Incorrect flame adjust-
ment
Pilot burner dirty
The pilot goes out
Faulty thermocouple
Poor flame
Poor contact with the coil Tighten the union on the gas valve
No main burner ignition
No power
Nozzles obstructed
Faulty gas valve
Fume thermostat inter-
vention
Explosions at main burner
No gas
Boiler dirty
Burner dirty
The main burner burns poorly
Incorrect flame adjust-
ment
Smell of unburnt gas
Boiler dirty
Insufficient flue draught
Insufficient air change
Incorrect (excess) flame
adjustment
No temperature increase with boiler
Incorrect flame adjust-
working
ment
Boiler dirty
Boiler insufficient
The control thermostat switches back on
Faulty control thermostat Replace the thermostat
with too great a temperature difference
Thermostat bulb out of
its sheath
The boiler creates condensate
Incorrect thermostat set-
ting
Insufficient gas con-
sumption
The boiler gets dirty easily
Incorrect flame adjust-
ment
The boiler shuts down for no apparent
Fume thermostat inter-
reason
vention

Cures
Replace the piezo
Replace the electrode or position it cor-
rectly (see fig. 10)
Screw down the terminal onto the igniter
cable
Open the gas cock
Vent as specified in the section on lighting
Clean the nozzle with compressed air
Adjust the flow with the valve screw
Check the gas pressure
Clean the pilot burner with compressed air
Check or replace the thermocouple
Adjust the flame, with the screw on the gas
valve, until it envelops the thermocouple
Wait for the power to return
Clean the nozzles thoroughly
Repair or replace the gas valve
Check for any obstructions in the flue and
manually reset the fume thermostat
Check the main burner gas pressure
Check and clean the boiler shell
Check and clean the burner
Check the main burner gas pressure (see
table 2)
Check and clean the boiler shell
Check the efficiency of flue draught
Increase room ventilation
Check the flow to the gas meter and the
main burner pressure
Check gas consumption
Check and clean the boiler shell
Make sure the boiler is adequate for the
heating system's demand
Make sure the bulb is properly inserted
Set the thermostat to a higher temperature
Make sure gas consumption complies with
that specified in
Check the main burner flame and that gas
consumption is correct for boiler output
Check for any obstructions in the flue and
manually reset the fume thermostat
Check correct circulation of water in the
system
